Barry Reed was a big, strong fullback from Henry, Ill., who had the misfortune of playing for Peru State during a period when Peru State Bobcat fortunes were not good.
Despite the fact that the Bobcats were just 11-29 during his playing days of 1970-73, and that all opponents were keying on the 6-4, 240-pounder, Reed set a then-school record yards with 2,009. At this time, his career total is still good for seventh on the all-time charts.
He was named to both the Lincoln Journal-Star and Omaha World-Herald all-star teams. In addition, he was twice named to the NAIA District 11 and Nebraska College Conference First Teams.
Reed was drafted as the overall 259th selection by the Minnesota Vikings as a running back as their tenth-round choice in the 1974 NFL draft.
He also participated in track and field while at Peru State and earned three letters. At the end of his athletic career for the Bobcats, Reed was named as the 50th recipient of the Bert E. Swenson Award.
