The Al Wheeler Activity Center became a reality in 1980 following a concerted effort by the athletic department and members of the student body. The “Bouncing Bobcat Dribble Drive” had more than 200 students and faculty members in November 1976 literally dribbling a basketball from Peru to the state capital steps in Lincoln. In addition to the dribble drive, students and others spoke in front of the legislature that following spring in support of funding for a new health and physical education center.

The Al Wheeler Activity Center opened in 1980 and is named after Alfred George Wheeler who served at Peru State College from 1938 to 1965 as a head coach for football, basketball, track and baseball. Wheeler also served as the Athletic Director and was an associate professor of physical education.

Wheeler was one of the three initial inductees in the NAIA Football Coaches Hall of Fame and served  the NAIA as its President in 1953-1954. He was named to the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame , Nebraska Football Hall of Fame and Peru State College Hall of Fame.

The Al Wheeler Activity Center "AWAC" is home to a plethora of Peru State athletics sports teams such as Men’s and Women’s Basketball, and Volleyball. There are multiple courts to utilize for all teams to practice and play on any given day. Each individual team has their own locker room to get the most unique game day experience. Coaches offices are located in the Al Wheeler Activity Center and a conference room nicknamed the "Sky Box" over looking the court. There is also a weight room facility and cardio room.

The Bobcat basketball and volleyball teams compete in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
