The “glory days” of Bobcat football returned with the 1980 squad. It had been 28 years since a PSC team won nine games, and no Bobcat squad had ever finished in the Top 10 of the NAIA.
The 1980 Cats were not the biggest or fastest PSC squad, but they had heart and they were fearless. The only blemish in their 9-1 season was a one-point loss; no other opponent came within 10 points of the Bobcats.
A balanced offense broke a school season scoring record that had stood since 1927. A smothering defense held seven opponents to 12 points or less.
While several of Peru State’s all-time great players were on the squad, it was the Bobcats’ balance, depth and above all its will to win that paved the way for this remarkable season.
