Following excellent performances in October, Shannon Liewer (Imperial) and Briar Burr (Wood River) were named the Peru State Bobcat Athletes of the Month for October. Athletic director Steve Schneider recently made the announcement.
Burr had a very consistent performance in his defensive back role in October which saw the Bobcats face three ranked opponents in a row before defeating Graceland this past weekend. Against Baker (Kan.), Burr had nine total tackles – three solo. The following week against William Penn (Iowa), Burr finished with 16 total tackles – four solo. Then, against Grand View (Iowa), Burr had another nine tackles – six solo. Last Saturday against Graceland (Iowa), he finished with eight total tackles – five solo. Also, against Graceland, Burr had four pass deflections.
Presently, Burr is second on the team through nine games with 74 total tackles – 29 of which are solo. He has two tackles for losses of 5.3 yards, one interception, and nine pass deflections. Burr is currently ranked 46th in the NAIA in passes defended per game averaging 1.0 per contest.
Both Liewer and Burr will be recognized as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes at the end of their respective seasons.
“Shannon and Briar are deserving of their being named as the October Bobcat Athletes of the Month. Shannon has come in and handled the libero responsibilities admirably and has also provided some tough serving for her team. Briar has stepped up this season as one of the leaders on the defense and has made some good plays for us all season long,” stated athletic director Schneider.
