(Peru, Neb.) – Bobcat volleyball senior Cristina Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Bobcat football senior Gunnar Orcutt (Omaha) were recently named by Peru State interim athletic director Steve Schneider as the December Bobcat Athletes of the Month. Viera and Orcutt were identified by Schneider for the honor based on their recent athletic and academic honors respectively.
Most recently, Viera was named to the Omaha World-Herald’s All-Nebraska NAIA/NCAA DIII First Team as a defensive specialist. This was the second year in a row that Viera had been named to the Omaha paper first team.
In addition, Viera was recognized early in December as she was named to the 2017 Tackikara-NAIA Volleyball All-America Honorable Mention list. This, too, was the second time Viera had earned a national recognition as she was a Third Team honoree as a junior.
Viera finished her career with the best single-season mark in digs with 897 last year and the third-best mark of 828 this season. She is seventh in career digs with 1,725 after just two seasons of play.
In announcing his December selections, Schneider noted “Both Cristina and Gunnar are truly deserving of the monthly recognition for what they have contributed to both of their respective programs over their years in Bobcat uniforms.”
