Box Score (Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State basketball team fell to the Morningside 89-77 on Saturday evening in the home opener. The Bobcats are 0-1 on the year while the Mustangs start the year off 1-0.
Below is a breakdown of how the game went…
Early in the game the Bobcats got out to 12-5 start after Jibril Harris
(Chicago, Ill.) knocked down a three. The Mustangs would then go on a 8-0 run to take a 13-12 lead with 13:32 to go in the first half.
The Bobcats then went on a massive 11-2 run to take a 23-15 lead after a Ty Griggs
(Omaha) made three pointer. The Bobcats would keep the Mustangs at length halfway through the first quarter as they were on fire from the three with Donzell Johnson (
Bloomington, Ill.) splashing one home to make the score 26-18.
The Mustangs would get the deficit down to three points a few times in the first half but the Bobcats answered every time. The Bobcats would go on an 11-4 run as they were up 37-27 after Harris made a layup forcing Morningside to call a timeout.
The Mustangs would get the score within five down 39-34, with 3:30 left in the half. The Mustangs would only score once more in the first half and the Bobcats ended the half with a bang as Troy Houghton
(Omaha) threw down a dunk as Peru State led 44-36 at the half.
Morningside came out ready to play in the second half as they would start the half on a 20-5 run to take a 56-49 lead. Lorenzo Anderson
(Lithonia, Ga.) hit a three pointer to get the Bobcats back down four.
Morningside then would go on a 10-0 run to make the score 66-52 at about the halfway point of the second half. Johnson knocked down a three to stop the run as the Bobcats were now down 66-55.
A little later Johnson would hit another three to get the deficit down to 10 as the Bobcats trailed 70-60 with around eight minutes to go. Morningside would keep their foot on the gas pedal as every time the Bobcats tried to come back the Mustangs would hit a big bucket.
Late in the second the Bobcats would get it to within single digits down to seven 79-72 after a three pointer from and a layup from Harris. Unfortunately, that is as close Peru State would get at the end of the second half as they would end up losing 89-77.
Peru State was 29-of-59 from the field shooting 49.2%. The Bobcats from beyond the arc were 13-of-24 shooting 54.2%. They were 6-for-11 from the charity stripe shooting 54.5%.
Morningside shot 28-of-54 from the field shooting 51.9%. The Mustangs from beyond the arc were 8-of-17 shooting 47.1%. They were 25-of-27 from the free throw line shooting 92.6%.
Johnson led the way in scoring with 18, while Harris finished with 17 and Houghton had 11. Harris led the way in rebounds and Man Man Baker
(Aurora, Colo.) finished with nine assists.
The Bobcats have their first road test of the season as they head to face York on Tuesday, November 1. Tip-Off is set for 7:00 p.m.
