Box Score 2 (Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State volleyball team on Friday, October 14, and Saturday, October 15, dropped matches to Mount Mercy and Clarke on the road they lost each match in three sets. The Bobcats are now 6-18 overall and 3-11 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how each match went…
Game 1 @ Mount Mercy
The Bobcats had a rough go in the first set against the Mustangs as they were trailing 10-3, but a kill by
Kim Krise (Briggsdale, Colo.) stopped the bleeding for the 'Cats. The Mustangs had a good hold of the first set as a 7-1 run would propel them to a 17-5 lead over the Bobcats.
Peru State was not able to get a run going as they would trade the next few points with Mount Mercy.
Kennedy Miller (Plattsmouth) had a couple kills in the stretch but the Bobcats were still trailing by 13, 22-9.
Mount Mercy won the first set 25-12.
In the second set the two teams traded blows as it was tied 4-4 early after an error from the Mustangs. Peru State would hang around the front end of the second set but could not get the lead.
A kill by
Lauren Moubray (Mission, Texas) would have the 'Cats within one 7-6. The Mustangs then went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead out to six.
The Bobcats would bring it back within four as kills by
Michelle Beer (Salem) and
Katie Mendick (Bellevue) would
make the score 12-8. That is the closest the 'Cats would get in set two.
The Mustangs then went on an 8-2 run as they led 18-10. A kill by
Kylee Fischer (Bellevue) would stop the Mustangs run.
Fischer would get the last kill for the Bobcats in set two as they fell 25-15.
Peru State started with a 2-0 lead in set three, with an ace from
Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa). The 'Cats would hang around early in the third set as another kill by Fischer would tie the game at five.
A quick four-point swing would have the Mustangs up 9-5 in the third set. The 'Cats would get within two; three times in the third set, down 10-8, 11-9 and finally 12-10 from a kill by Mendick.
A kill by Miller would have the 'Cats within three down 15-12 but then a 10-1 run by the Mustangs closed out the set 25-13 and they won the match 3-0.
Mendick led the way in kills with six, Fischer had five and Krise had four. Gordon had two aces. Beer and Krise each had a block.
Gordon led the way in assists with ten,
Rylee Hellbusch (Plattsmouth) had five and
Mattie Nichols (Auburn) had two.
Nichols led the way in digs with 17,
Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had ten and Gordon had nine.
Game 2 @ Clarke
Peru State started off hot against Clarke in the first set as they were up 5-1, with kills from Moubray, Fischer and Mendick. The Pride then went on a 6-1 run to take a 7-6 lead.
The Bobcats and the Pride then would trade points back and forth in the first as they were tied ten all. A 4-1 run had Clarke with a small 15-11 lead in the first, the 'Cats went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead with kills from Beer and Mendick.
Clarke late in the set regained a two-point lead, 19-17, but a service error and kills by Fischer and
Keiley Hein (Omaha) had the 'Cats retake the lead at 20-19.
A 6-1 run by Clarke ended the first set as they won 25-21.
Both teams traded blows in the second set traded blows early as the score was tied 6-6. Clarke tried to pull away as they went up 9-6, but then three straight kills by Krise, Mendick and Moubray had the game tied at nine.
The 'Cats would then take a 13-10 lead with kills from Mendick and Nichols. The Pride would not go away as they would be trailing by one multiple times throughout the middle of the second set.
Peru State then extended their lead out to four 18-14 from the help of multiple errors by the Pride and a kill by Fischer. The Bobcats would keep the Pride at bay for most of the second set as they were up by three or four until it was 24-22.
A 5-1 run in the final stages of the second set had the Pride stun the 'Cats as they won set two 27-25 and took a 2-0 lead.
The beginning of the third set was again a close affair as they would trail by one 6-5. Then the Pride would extend their lead out to five leading 10-5.
A 10-1 run would have the Pride up 16-6 in the third set, the Pride would keep the 'Cats at bay as they were up 18-8 late in third set. A kill by Krise stopped the bleeding as they were now down 18-9.
The 'Cats would get a few more kills from Krise and Moubray but fell to the Pride in the third set 25-14 and would win the match 3-0.
Fischer led the way in kills with eight, Mendick and Moubray finished with five. Nichols and Paniagua each had one ace. Beer and Moubray had a block each.
Gordon had 12 assists
Allie Schneider (Humphrey) finished with eight and Hellbusch had six. Nichols finished with 11 digs,
Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) and Paniagua finished with six.
Peru State returns home Friday, October 21, for a date with No. 14 Park. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
