Culver-Stockton Football Hands Peru State Its Eighth Loss

(Peru, Neb.) – After a tightly-contested first half, the Culver-Stockton (C-SC) Wildcats scored 27 points in the second half to roll to a victory over the Peru State Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the Oak Bowl.

It was the eighth-straight loss in a row for Peru State who also fell to 0-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division. For the Wildcats, it was their first win in the Heart North as they improved to 1-1 in divisional play and went to 3-5 overall for the season.

First Quarter Action

The Bobcats won the toss and deferred to the second half. Culver-Stockton took the opening possession and went 73 yards in six plays and scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and the Wildcats led 7-0 with 13:14 on the first quarter clock.

Michael Bullard (Nassau, Bahamas) returned the C-SC kick 15 yards out to Peru State's 21-yard line where they started their first drive. Two running plays netted only one yard bringing up third and nine. Dillon Ruelas (Lincoln) would find Mitchel Orr (Smithville, Mo.) for 13 yards and a first down. On the next play, J'Lon Horton (Valrico, Fla.) carried the ball which was fumbled, but Mark Zepeda (Grand Island) recovered it resulting in a 13-yard first down. On the next set of downs, Peru State eventually moved the ball to Culver-Stockton 40-yard line on an offside penalty called on the Wildcats.

On third and nine, Ruelas again found Orr, this time for 29 yards and the Bobcats were now in the red zone at the ten-yard line. Horton carried for four and then Ruelas went in from six yards out for his first touchdown as a Bobcat. John Brady's (Hickman) point after was good and it was now tied 7-7 with 6:49 left in the opening frame.

Second Quarter Action

On Culver-Stockton's third possession of the quarter, the Wildcats attempted a 31-yard field goal which was block by Victor Hubbard (Corinth, Texas) and recovered by Luis Constantino (Varzea Grande, Brazil) at the Bobcat 23-yard line.

The Bobcats would eat some time off the clock, but eventually Culver-Stockton would intercept a long pass attempt. The Wildcats eventually took over on their 25-yard line with just over two minutes left in the first half.

That was enough time for C-SC to put together a scoring drive as they went 75 yards in seven plays with a four-yard touchdown pass capping off the drive. The PAT was good and the Wildcats led 14-7 at halftime.

Third Quarter Action

The Bobcats managed one first down on their first possession of the second half and then were forced to punt. It only took Culver-Stockton four plays to go 67 yards which culminated with a 34-yard run for their first score of the second half. The PAT was good and the Wildcats now led 21-7 with 9:32 left in the third stanza.

A penalty on the kick-off put Peru State deep at their six-yard line. C-SC would eventually force a punt and they would start their next possession on the Bobcats' 30-yard line. While this drive was longer, the Wildcats would score on their ninth play which was a nine-yard touchdown pass. The point after was good and Culver-Stockton now led 28-7 with 6:12 to go in the third quarter.

After forcing a three and out for the Bobcats, Culver-Stockton would go 68 yards in four plays to score. A 30-yard run was the play. Hubbard blocked the PAT, but the Wildcats led 34-7 with just a little time left in the third period.

Culver-Stockton would led 34-7 with 15 minutes to play.

Fourth Quarter Action

The Bobcats went on a fourth and one to start the quarter, but could not get the first down. This gave Culver-Stockton a decent starting position at Peru State's 42-yard line. It would take the Wildcats ten plays, but they would score for the last time in the game. The PAT was good for what would be the final score of 41-7.

Culver-Stockton did have one other possession where they had an opportunity to score, but the Bobcat defense stopped them at Peru State's 18-yard line.
