Peru State athletic director Steve Schneider announced that Bobcat volleyball player Cristina Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay) and six members of the Bobcat offensive line were selected as the October Athletes of the Month. They were picked based on their efforts and/or honors earned during the past month.
The senior libero, Viera twice earned Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Defender of the Week honors during October. Viera earned back-to-back honors on Oct. 23 and Oct. 30. For the week prior to Oct. 23, Viera averaged 6.80 digs per set in three matches. She had 33 digs in a four-set loss to Central Methodist (Mo.) and then had 19 against Graceland (Iowa) and 16 against Missouri Valley.
Â
During the week prior to Oct. 30 Viera had 39 digs in a four-set loss to Clarke (Iowa) and added 21 digs in Peru State’s sweep of Culver-Stockton on senior night. For the week she averaged 8.57 digs per set.
Â
At the present time (11-7-17), Viera is listed in three different NAIA individual categories: first in digs per game (6.680), second in total digs (828), and 36th in total service aces (52).
In announcing his October selections, Schneider noted Viera was selected because of her Heart honors. In addition, he noted that a lot of times, the offensive line does not get the recognition it deserves.Â
