(Peru, Neb.)--The Peru State volleyball team fell to the Grand View Vikings in five sets on Tuesday night as the reverse sweep fell short. The Bobcats are now 6-10 overall and 1-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Vikings are now 3-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how the five set match went..
In the first set, Grand View had an early jump on Peru State as they led 8-2. The Vikings later in the set extended their lead out to eight as they were up 14-6. Grand View was all over the first set as they led 20-11 and closed out the first set 25-15.
The second set started out much stronger for the Bobcats as they were leading 11-7 after a 7-0 run featuring attack errors from the Vikings, a kill from Keiley Hein (Omaha) and a service ace from
Erison Vonderschmidt (Falls City).
Grand View then went on a tear to finish the second set on an 18-3 run as they took set two 25-14. Peru State would not give up as they showed a lot of heart battling back in the third set.
The Bobcats started the third setup 9-3 after kills from Vonderschmidt, Shealie Wiebers (Papillion) and attack errors from the Vikings. Peru State had its lead out to eight up 13-5 after a service ace from
Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa). Late in the third set the Bobcats had the lead extended out to ten up 19-9. Contributing were kills from Regan Osterhaus (Wetmore, Kan.).
The closest the Vikings would get in the third set was five points trailing 23-18 but the Bobcats won the third set 25-18. The fourth set was tight for a majority until the Bobcats were able to get a three-point lead with help of kills from Addison Schneider (Humphrey) and Vonderschmidt.
Peru State was leading Grand View 20-17. The Vikings cut the lead to two trailing 22-20. Kills from Vonderschmidt, Osterhaus and an attacking error gave the Bobcats the set win.
Grand View started the fifth strong after an early 4-4 tie the Vikings went on an 8-0 run to go up 12-4. Grand View ended up winning the set 15-7 and won the match 3-2 as the Bobcats ran out of gas.
Vonderschmidt led the way in kills with 14, Addison Schneider had eight and Osterhaus finished with seven. Addison Schneider and Elli Williams (Olathe) finished with three blocks each.
Allie Schneider (Humphrey) led the team in assists with 31.
Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.) finished with a team-high 14 digs.
Allie Schneider and
Alyssa Bock (Plattsmouth) each finished with nine.
Peru State will continue its road travels as they face Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., on Friday, September 22. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
