Box Score 3 (Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State baseball team started its season over the weekend in Salina, Kansas as they were swept by Kansas Wesleyan. The Bobcats fall to 0-3 to start the season while the Coyotes improve to 4-4 on the season.
Below is a breakdown of how the series went…
Game 1 L 18-1 @ Kansas Wesleyan F/7
In the top of the first inning the Bobcats went 1-2-3 and then the Coyotes took advantage in the bottom of the first as a single, a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Kansas Wesleyan then hit a grand slam as they were on top 4-0 right away.
Kansas Wesleyan scored four runs on three hits in the first.
In the top of the second the Bobcats were able to get to players on base via walks but both were stranded in the inning. The Coyotes went down in order in the bottom half of the second.
Peru State was able to get one on base in third inning but still could not get a hit three innings into the game. Kansas Wesleyan blew open the game in the bottom half of the third scoring eight runs.
The Coyotes loaded the bases right away and then scored on a fielder's choice, after that a double and an error led to two more runs. Kansas Wesleyan then hit a second grand slam as the score was now a whopping 12-0.
Kansas Wesleyan scored eight runs on six hits and two errors while leaving two on base. Peru State still could not get anything going in the fourth inning as they left one on base from a walk.
The Coyotes kept the bats hot in the fourth inning as a three-run home run made the score 15-0 as they scored three runs on one hit.
The Bobcats would get their first two hits in the top of the fifth inning but still were unable to put a run on the board. The Coyotes stranded two on base in the bottom of the fifth and were unable to score any runs.
Peru State was able to get on base from an error and a walk but still were unable to produce any runs in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth the Coyotes were once again able to load the bases and then a walk scored their 16
th run of the game.
Then a ground rule double scored two more runs for the Coyotes as they were now leading 18-0.
In the top of the seventh inning
Jacob Aberg (Lincoln) walked and then
Ivan Medina (Maracaibo, Venezuela) hit an RBI double as Aberg come into score the lone run.
Peru State fell in the first game 18-1.
The Bobcats used five different pitchers in game one.
Kevin Diaz was credited with the loss and pitched in 2.1 innings giving up 12 runs on eight hits and 11 were earned.
Hunter Abney (King City, Mo.) pitched in 1.1 innings giving up two runs on one hit both were earned.
Josue Vega (Cayey, P.R.) pitched in 1.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits.
Xavier Solla (Bayamon, P.R.) pitched in 0.2 innings and gave up three runs on no hits and all three were earned.
Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) pitched in 0.1 innings and gave up one hit.
Medina,
William Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Pavletich each had one hit.
Game 2 L 11-7 @ Kansas Wesleyan F/7
In the top of the first inning the Bobcats went down in order. The Coyotes got two base runners on immediately in the first inning. Then with two down a two run RBI double scored the first two runs of the game. A single would then score the third run of the game.
Kansas Wesleyan scored three runs on three hits and left one on base in the first.
Peru State in the second inning loaded the bases after an
Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) walk,
Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled and
Randy Jimenez (Santiago De Los Caballeros) walked.
The Bobcats then scored two runs off an error to make it a one run game trailing 3-2 in the top of the second. Kansas Wesleyan was not able to get much going in the bottom of the second as they had no runs on no hits and left one on base.
Peru State tied the game in the top of third inning as Reynolds hit a leadoff home run into right center field. The Bobcats were able to get two more base runners on but left both of them stranded but the game was tied at three.
The Coyotes broke open the second in the bottom of third inning scoring six runs. They started off with a two RBI single to make the score 5-3. Then a homer to left scored two more as the score was now 7-3. An RBI ground out and a triple scored two more as the Coyotes led 9-3 after three.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the fourth inning. Kansas Wesleyan hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth as they had a double digit runs leading 10-3.
Peru State was able to get one on base from a walk in the top of fifth but nothing else and Kansas Wesleyan was not able to get much going in the bottom half.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. The Coyotes again led off an inning with a home run as they now were up 11-3. That is all the damage the Coyotes would do in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bobcats had one last go at it as Medina singled and Reynolds reached on an error with one out in the final inning. Then an RBI single from Josue Vasquez
(Salinas, P.R.) making the score 11-4.
Yodelvy Garcia then hit an RBI double and Andrades hit an RBI single as the score was now 11-6.
Bradford then had an RBI groundout as Peru State was only down four runs 11-7. Unfortunately, a fielder's choice ended the game and the Coyotes won game two.
Peru State used four pitchers in game number two.
Jan Vargas (Juncos, P.R.) gave up one run on one hit and was credited with the loss.
Fernando Falero (Carolina, P.R.) pitched two innings giving up eight runs on six hits all eight runs were earned.
Brenton Pitt (Fremont) pitched two innings giving up one run on three hits. And
Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched two innings giving up one run on one hit.
Bradford and Garcia tied for the lead in hits with two each. Then there was a five-way tie for RBIs as Andrades, Bradford, Garcia, Reynolds and Vasquez each had one.
Game 3 L 13-3 @ Kansas Wesleyan F/7
The Bobcats started the first inning of the final game with a bang as Medina hit a leadoff home run into right field. Then a walk and a double from Reynolds and Vazquez had two runners in scoring position.
Then an RBI groundout from Garcia led to the second run of the game as the Bobcats were up 2-0 at the top of the first on two hits.
The Coyotes got one run back in the bottom half of the first inning after an RBI single but would leave two left on base.
Peru State was able to get two base runners on in the second inning via a single from Jimenez and a walk from Aberg but one got into the middle of a double play and the other got caught stealing to end the half inning.
Two doubles for the Coyotes in the bottom of the second tied the game at two apiece. Then a two-run home run to right center field had Kansas Wesleyan with its first lead of the game up 4-2. Kansas Wesleyan scored three runs on four hits and left one on base in the bottom of the second.
Peru State was not able to get much going in the top of the third as they were only able to get a single from Vazquez in the inning.
The Coyotes poured it on in the bottom of third inning as was the case all series long. Kansas Wesleyan got two runners on base from a bunt and a fielding error.
Then a double scored one run as the score was now 5-2. The Coyotes then scored on a ground out and a single as it was now 7-2. Then later in the inning a double scored the Coyotes eighth run of the game.
Kansas Wesleyan got into double digit runs for third time in the series as a two-run home run to left scored the tenth run for the Coyotes. Kansas Wesleyan scored six runs on five hits and an error and left no one on base as they now led 10-2 heading into the fourth.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the fourth inning. Kansas Wesleyan did not do much in its half of the fourth inning as well.
The Bobcats were able to get a single from Aberg in the top of the fifth but still struggled to get a run across the plate. The Coyotes in the bottom of the fifth were able to score their 11
th run on a sac fly as they scored one run on two hits an error and left two on base in the bottom half of the fifth.
In the sixth inning, Vazquez led off the Bobcats with a walk then with a couple of errors by the Coyotes the Bobcats had runners in scoring position. Jimenez hit an RBI single as the Bobcats scored their third run of the game trailing 11-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Coyotes were able to score twice more. Once off a throwing error and then another on an RBI double as they were up ten 13-3.
Peru State went three up three down to end the game as they lost the third game and the series 13-3.
Peru State used four pitchers in the third game.
Blake Denson (Broken Bow) pitched in 1.2 innings giving up nine runs on nine hits five of them were earned. Pacheco pitched 2.2 innings giving up three runs on three hits and two were earned.
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) pitched one inning giving up one run on two hits and Pavletich pitched 0.2 innings giving up a hit.
Jimenez and Vazquez tied for the lead in hits with two each. Aberg, Medina and Reynolds each contributed an RBI.
Peru State hits the road this weekend to face Friends University. First pitch is set for Friday, February 10, at 1:00 p.m.
