PSC Volleyball Falls to Mount Mercy Saturday Morning

Box Score (Peru, Neb.)—On Saturday, September 17, the Peru State volleyball team was defeated by the Mount Mercy Mustangs 3-1. The Bobcats fall to 5-8 overall and 2-2 Heart of America conference play, while the Mustangs improve to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how each set went in the four-set loss.
 
Mount Mercy started out hot in the first set as they were leading 5-1. Peru State then came back to tie the set at nine all with a service ace from Allie Schneider (Humphrey). In the middle of the first set, the game was going back and forth as a kill by Schneider would tie game at 15 all.
 
Peru State would finally take the lead from a kill by Katie Mendick (Bellevue) as the 'Cats led 17-16. The Bobcats unfortunately could not pull away as it would be tied at 20 late in the first set. The Mustangs then went on a 5-0 run to take the first set 25-20.
 
The 'Cats started out with a bang in the second set as they led 7-2 early from a couple of kills by Mendick and Kylee Fischer (Bellevue). A 5-0 run by the Mustangs tied the game at seven all.
 
Later, in the second set the 'Cats went on a 7-2 run with the help of a few kills by Michelle Beer (Salem) and Schneider. Mount Mercy would only score four more points in the second set, as the 'Cats won set two 25-16 with the help of a couple of Mustang errors and kills by Fischer and Kim Krise (Briggsdale, Colo.).
 
Mount Mercy came out flying in the third set with a 12-4 lead, Mendick finally stopped the bleeding with a kill as they trailed 12-5. The Mustangs had set number three under control as they were leading the Bobcats 18-9.
 
The 'Cats tried to claw their way back into the game with a 5-1 run to make the score 19-14. That's the closest the 'Cats would get in the third set as they ended up falling 25-18.
 
Fourth set was tight early as the game would be tied twice at five all and again at 10-10 off a kill from Mendick. The Mustangs then went on a 15-2 run to close out the game winning the fourth set 25-12. The lone two kills were from Mendick.
 
Mendick led the way in kills with 13, Krise and Schneider each had eight. Schneider had three aces while Gordon had two and Mattie Nichols (Auburn) had one. Beer had four blocks while Kennedy Miller (Plattsmouth) had three and Fischer finished with two.
 
Schneider led the way in assists with 19, while Gordon had 17 and Nichols had one. Nichols led the way in digs with 19, Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) had 14 and Schneider had 12.
 
Peru State hits the road to face Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday, September 19, in Lincoln, Neb. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
