(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State volleyball team was defeated by William Penn in three sets on Tuesday night. The Bobcats fall to 6-13 overall and 3-6 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while the Statesmen improve to 11-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how each set in the match went…
William Penn started the first hot as they raced out to a 10-2 lead, before a kill by
Keiley Hein (Omaha) stopped the bleeding. The Bobcats would get the lead to within seven after a couple kills from
Katie Mendick (Bellevue) would make the score 15-8.
The Statesmen would extend their lead out to ten in the first set to make the score 19-9. The 'Cats would not go quietly as they mustered an 8-1 rally to make the score 20-17 with aces from
Michelle Beer (Salem) and
Allie Schneider (Humphrey) and
kills by
Kennedy Miller (Plattsmouth), and Mendick.
Peru State was down 24-22 after a kill from Schneider but the Statesmen won the first set 25-22.
Peru State would start the second set down 9-4, but then a 9-4 run would tie the game at 13 with kills by Hein, Mendick and Miller. Two aces from Schneider also helped the 'Cats tie the set.
Peru State would then take a 16-15 lead after a kill from Miller, then both teams would trade points for the rest of the second set until the score was knotted at 23. Then two kills by the Statesmen iced the second set.
In the third set William Penn and Peru State traded blows until a couple errors and a block assist by Miller and Fischer made the score 11-9 'Cats as the Statesmen called a timeout.
The teams would then be in a back-and-forth affair until the score was 19-19, the Bobcats would only score one more point in the set as they fell to the Statesmen 25-20 in the set, as William Penn swept the match.
Mendick led the way in kills with 16, while Miller had nine and Hein finished with seven. Schneider had four aces, while Beer and Bock tied for one each. Fischer led the way in blocks with two, Miller and Beer had one.
Schneider finished with 32 assists, while
Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had three and
Mattie Nichols (Auburn) had two. Nichols and Schneider tied for digs with 11,
Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) finished with seven.
Peru State has a big weekend in volleyball as they head to Missouri to face No. 16 Central Methodist on Friday, October 7, first serve is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, they will face the Vikings of Missouri Valley College with first serve set for 2:00 p.m.
