Peru State Volleyball Falls in both Matches on Final Road Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State volleyball team hit the road for the final time this season as they played William Penn Friday night falling 3-0 and Grand View on Saturday afternoon in three sets. The Bobcats are now 6-22 overall and 3-15 in Heart of America Athletic Conference Play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how each game went…
 
Game 1 at William Penn
 
William Penn started out on fire in the first set as they got out to a 13-4 lead, then a kill by Keiley Hein (Omaha) stopped the bleeding for the Bobcats as they trailed 13-5. The Bobcats would get within seven twice in the first set as Lauren Moubray (Mission, Tex.) would get a few kills sandwiched in between an error by the Statesmen.
 
Peru State trailed 15-8 in the first set. The Statesmen kept their foot on the gas pedal as they went on a 10-2 run to close out the first set winning 25-10. Michelle Beer (Salem) would have the final two kills for the Bobcats in the first.
 
Peru State started with a lead early in the second set after a kill by Beer and an error by the Statesmen as they were up 2-1. The Bobcats would keep it close in the beginning stages of the second set as they were down 8-5. The Statesmen would then go on a 6-3 run to get up 14-8.
 
The Bobcats would get the score within four down 15-11 after a couple errors from the Statesmen and a kill by the Statesmen. William Penn then went on a 10-2 run to close out the second set 25-13. Kim Krise (Briggsdale, Colo.) and Kylee Fischer (Bellevue) had the final two kills of the second set for the Bobcats.
 
Peru State and William Penn were deadlocked early in the third set as Fischer got a kill to even the score at two apiece. The Bobcats were down 9-3 before a kill by Rylee Hellbusch (Plattsmouth) stopped the Statesmen run.
 
Peru State would get the deficit to within five a few more times from kills by Katie Mendick (Bellevue), Moubray and Fischer as the score was now 12-7. A 13-4 run had the Statesmen close out the final set 25-11. Beer and Krise had the final kills of the set for the Bobcats.
 
The Statesmen swept the Bobcats 3-0.
 
Beer and Fischer finished with five kills each to lead the way for Peru State. Moubray finished with four. Kennedy Miller (Plattsmouth), Beer and Krise finished with one block each.
 
Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa) led the way in assists with 11 while Hellbusch had eight and Mattie Nichols (Auburn) finished with one. Nichols led the way in digs with nine while Beer finished with six and Gordon finished with five.
 
Game 2 at Grand View
Grand View got out to a hot start as they led 14-3 early in game one. The Bobcats would keep the set within ten multiple times as they would get kills from Moubray and Mendick. The score was now 17-7 Vikings.
 
The Vikings would go on a 4-0 run to get the lead out to 13 leading 21-7. The Bobcats then went on a 4-1 run with kills by Fischer and Krise, but the Vikings ended up winning the set 25-11.
 
Grand View started out the second set up 12-3, before a kill by Fischer would stop the Grand View run momentarily. Peru State got the score within ten a few more times with a kill by Krise and a block assist by Hellbusch and Moubray.
 
A 9-2 run closed out the second set for the Vikings as they won 25-8.
 
Peru State started out up 4-2 in the third set with kills by Jaime Copenharve (Omaha) and Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and a few errors by the Vikings. Grand View then went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead in the third.
 
A kill by Beer would stop the 7-0 run and kills by Miller would keep the Bobcats within striking distance as they were down five 12-7. Grand View then went on a 7-2 run as they had a commanding 19-9 lead. The Bobcats would get a few more points in the set from a block assist from Beer and Mendick and kills by Mendick, Copenharve and Krise.
 
Grand View won the third set 25-13 and won the match.
 
Krise led the way in kills with four, while Miller and Fischer finished with three each. Miller, Hellbusch and Beer all had one block each. Hellbusch and Gordon tied for the lead in assists with seven each and Nichols finished with two.
 
Nichols led the way in digs with 15 while Hellbusch had 10 and Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) had nine.
 
Peru State has one more home game as they host Graceland for Senior night on Tuesday, November 1. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
