(Peru, Neb.) – The12th-ranked Grand View (Iowa) Vikings held off a fired-up Peru State volleyball team Friday night to win their fourth match in a row.
The Vikings topped Peru State 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22 to improve to 15-7 on the season and 9-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The 'Cats fell to 5-18 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

The match was delayed for over 45 minutes as Grand View was held up in traffic on Highway 2 due to an accident in Iowa.

Grand View scored the first point of the match with a service ace. The Bobcats scored with a kill from
Mallory Matthies (Omaha) on an assist from
Darlene Quinonez Holguin (Anthony, N.M.). Back-to-back attack errors on the Vikings gave Peru State a 3-1 lead. The 'Cats would hold onto the lead and their largest advantage at 10-7 after
Savanna Davis (Anchorage, Alaska) got a block.
The Vikings would tie it up at 10-10 before
Dawson Sharman (Sidney) broke the tie. A setter dump by Quinonez Holguin again put the Bobcats up by two. It was at that point that Grand View went on a ten-point run. Peru State would fight back and be within three at several different points before the Vikings would eventually win the first set 25-21.

Tyra Mollhoff (Lincoln) and
Alexandra Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) gave Peru State the first two points of the second set. The first part of the set was close with it being tied at 7-7 and later at 13-13. It was at that point where the Viking ran off six-straight points to lead 19-13. The 'Cats would not get any closer after that as Grand View would win 25-17.

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) gave Peru State an early advantage. Grand View would rattle off four straight points before
Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) put down a kill from C. Davis. An attack error on Grand View was followed by a Cudney on an assist from C. Davis tied it at 4-4. Another Viking error was followed by a Chavarria kill from C. Davis to put Peru State up 6-4.

The Bobcats would hold onto the lead throughout the entire set. They would lead 12-6 after a kill by S. Davis from Quinonez Holguin. The 'Cats would have their largest lead at 19-11 after a kill from Cudney off an assist from C. Davis which forced a Grand View time out. The Vikings would pull within five at 23-18 before Matthies put down a spike from Quinonez Holguin. After a Grand View point, Chavarria scored the final point with a kill from C. Davis.

The fourth set was tight throughout as neither team had more than a three-point lead throughout. Peru State's first three-point advantage came at 12-9 after Chavarria got a block.

Later, the Vikings would tie it at 12-12. Then, the set was tied at 13, 14, 15, and 16 before S. Davis got a kill on an overpass. Grand View would come back to tie it before Matthies and Quinonez Holguin hooked up to make it 19-18. A kill by Mollhoff was followed by one from
Grace Frederick (Benkelman) which put the 'Cats up again by three at 21-18.

Grand View would come back to tie it at 21 and then went ahead 23-21 before a block by Matthies stopped the run. However, the Vikings would get the final two points to win the set and match.

The Vikings outhit the Bobcats .176 to .128. Peru State did have a few more digs than Grand View as they finished with 97 compared to 93 for the Vikings.

The Bobcats had five service aces while the Vikings finished with two. Both teams had big blocking nights with Grand View finishing with nine total blocks compared to seven for Peru State.

Cudney had a game-high 16 kills while finishing the night hitting .310 – one of her best matches of the year. S. Davis had her best night in a Bobcat uniform as she finished with nine kills and hit .421. Chavarria added eight kills while Matthies finished with seven. Mollhoff added six kills.

C. Davis led the team with 27 assists while Quinonez Holguin finished with 19.

Peru State is playing a pair of matches in Lamoni, Iowa, facing Heart opponent Graceland and then taking on non-conference foe Haskell Indian Nations University at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively. The Yellowjackets are 6-16 overall and 2-6 in Heart conference play. The Fighting Indians are 7-12 on the year.

Peru State will be on the road next Tuesday night when they travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa, to face William Penn at 7 p.m. The Statesmen are 8-12 on the year and are 3-8 in Heart play.
