(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State volleyball team did what they were expected to do Friday night and that was to sweep the home team – the Missouri Valley Vikings.
The 'Cats did just that by winning 25-23, 25-14, 25-21 to improve to 10-20 on the season and more importantly 6-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Vikings, who are struggling this season, fell to 1-27 on the year and 0-13 in conference play.
First Set Action
As the score would indicate, the set was tight throughout. A kill from
Alyssa Childers (Lincoln) off an assist from Cassidy Davis
(Colorado Spring) gave Peru State the first point of the match.

Later, Peru State would have its largest lead of the first set at 12-7 on a kill by
Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) on an overpass. The Vikings would close the gap and eventually tie it at 14 apiece before Childers would get a kill, this time from
Darlene Quinonez Holguin (Anthony, N.M.).
Missouri Valley would actually come back and take a lead at 20-19 before committing an attack error to knot the score. Another hitting error by the Vikings would give Peru State the 21-20 lead.
The Vikings would later tie it at 22-22, but were then called for a setting error. Cudney would give Peru State their 24
th point with a kill on an assist from
Sarah Brown (Seward). The Vikings would call a time out and after the break, Peru State committed a hitting error. Cudney would finish the set with a kill on an assist from Childers.
Second Set Action
The first part of the second set went back and forth early and was tied at 3-3 before
Grace Frederick (Benkelman) put down a kill from Quinonez Holguin. The Bobcats would never trail after that point.
Peru State would go out to a 19-8 lead after
Alexis Cox (Brighton, Colo.) hit a service ace forcing a Viking timeout. Missouri Valley would pull within nine at 21-12, but that would be as close as they would be in the set. A service error by the Vikings gave Peru State the 25
th point in the second set.
Third Set Action
There were 12 ties in the third set. The Bobcats would jump out to an early lead which started with a hitting error on Missouri Valley. Childers would get a get from Quinonez Holguin and then Quinonez Holguin put down a setter dump to make it 3-0. Cudney extended the lead to 4-0 with a kill from Cox.

The Vikings would eventually come back to tie it a 5-5 before taking the lead. Missouri Valley would eventually have a five-point lead at 11-6 before committing a service error.
Missouri Valley maintained the lead until
Alexandra Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) got a kill from Davis to tie it at 16-16.
The Vikings would later lead 19-18 before Frederick knotted the score with a kill from Quinonez Holguin. A setting error gave Peru State the lead at 20-19 before the Vikings tied it with a kill.
Back-to-back hitting errors on the Vikings put Peru State up for good. Eventually, a kill by Chavarria on an assist from Quinonez Holguin would give the 'Cats the match.

Team Statistics
Peru State outhit the Vikings .235 to .159 while having 11 more kills than Missouri Valley as they finished with 44. The Bobcats had five service aces and only one error while it was almost the reverse for the Vikings as they had one ace and six serving errors.
The digs were nearly equal as the 'Cats had 60 and Vikings had 56. Missouri Valley out-blocked the Bobcats as they finished with six total blocks compared to just two for Peru State.

Cudney finished with a match-high 11 kills while Frederick was one short of double figures as she had nine. Chavarria added eight with Childers finishing with six.
Quinonez Holguin led the team with 16 assists while Davis added 12.
Brown and Cox each had two service aces while Quinonez Holguin had one.

Cudney had a match-high 16 digs while Brown, Cox, and
Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) each added eight. Quinonez Holguin added six digs.
Cudney was credited with the team's lone solo block while Childers and
Mallory Matthies (Omaha) each had one block assist.
Upcoming Contests
The Bobcats were scheduled to play Evangel on Saturday in Springfield, Mo. The Crusaders headed into the contest with a 19-9 mark and were 6-7 in the Heart having dropped their contest Friday night at home to Graceland (Iowa).
Peru State will have a little break as they are not scheduled to play again until Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on ranked Grand View at 7 p.m. The 12
th-ranked Vikings are 20-9 overall and are on top of the Heart North with a 12-1 mark.
The Bobcats will then be at home for two crucial back-to-back matches on Nov. 1 and 2 when they host Clarke (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (Iowa) – the two other teams ahead of them in the North Division.
