Peru State VB Sweeps Two Matches in Lawrence, Kan.

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcats made quick work of two non-conference opponents in the Haskell Indian Nations University tri-match on Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.
 
Peru State swept Johnson & Wales (Colo.) 25-9, 25-10, and 25-17 before sweeping the hosts 25-11, 25-15, and 25-10. With the two wins, the 'Cats improved to 15-8 on the season.

Peru State held the Tigers to a negative hitting percentage at -.012 while hitting a very good .390 themselves as a team.

First Set Action
 
A kill by Rian Kirby (Gretna) off an assist from Brooke Rudebusch (Moorpark, Calif.) to get the first point of the set. Then, behind the serving of Gianna Gangi (Simi Valley, Calif.), Peru State rattled off ten more points before Johnson & Wales got on the board. The Tigers were only able to string together three points at a time once as Peru State cruised to an easy 25-9 set win.
 
Second Set Action
 
The second set was a lot closer earlier as the Tigers were within two at 6-4 before the Bobcats scored three with the last point being a service ace by Nohely Perez (Caracas, Venezuela) to go up 9-4. After J&W scored a point, Peru State rattled off nine points to go up 18-5. Eventually, a kill by Perez would end the set at 25-10.
 
Third Set Action
 
After the set was tied at 3-3, Kirby put down a kill from Rudebusch and then scored four more points to lead 9-4. The Tigers did keep it close throughout and were within four as late as 19-15. A kill by Lea Boras (Makarska, Croatia) off an assist from Gangi started a four-point run to push the 'Cats out to 23-15. After J&W scored a point, Alaya Roberts (Cibolo, Texas) had a kill off an assist from Rudebusch to give Peru State the match point. The Tigers did score one, but then an attack error by J&W gave Peru State the set and match.

Perez was the only Bobcat in double figure with kills as she had ten while hitting .438. Jhessica Martins and Kirby each added eight with Martins hitting .429 and Kirby hitting .368. Alex Bowman (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had five kills while hitting .625.
 
Rudebusch and Meg Grose led the setting for Peru State with 21 and 16 assists respectively.
 
Peru State had seven service aces while J&W did not have one. Gangi and Grose each had two service aces with Nadja Janjevic (Podgorica, Montenegro), Perez, and Shannon Liewer (Imperial) each adding one.
 
Liewer had a game-high 14 digs.
 
Bowman was credited with the only solo block while Peru State added 14 block assists. Bowman was credited with five of those with Cristal Quinonez (Anthony, N.M.) added four. Janjevic had two block assists with Kirby, Martins, and Boras each finishing with one.
 
Haskell Indian Nations University Highlights
 
Peru State had another great defensive game as they held the Fighting Indians to the same negative hitting percentage of .012 while actually hitting .425 in the win.
 
First Set Highlights
 
Peru State jumped to a 4-0 lead before Haskell was able to get on the board. After the Fighting Indians scored, Kirby put down a kill on an assist from Rudebusch made it 5-1. The 'Cats would add another three points before Haskell was able to score again. A kill by Quinonez on an assist from Grose finished off the first set.

Second Set Highlights
 
Haskell scored first in the second set before Kirby and Rudebusch hooked up again to tie it at 1-1. After the Fighting Indians were within one at 4-3, Peru State rattled off eight points to go up 12-3 before Haskell made a run at the 'Cats. The Fighting Indians cut it to 13-11 before Quinonez put down a kill to go back up by three at 14-11. A kill by Martins was followed by a Haskell hitting error and with Peru State leading 16-11; the Fighting Indians took a time out. Peru State went on a 9-4 run to win the second set 25-15 on a kill by Perez from an assist by Rudebusch.
 
Third Set Highlights
 
Martins started the third set with a kill on an assist from Rudebusch. Peru State jumped to a 9-3 lead before Haskell managed to score a couple of points. Boras put down a kill on an assist from Grose to put Peru State up 10-5. Three consecutive Haskell hitting errors put the 'Cats up 13-5 before the Fighting Indians finally put one down. Haskell would score only five more points as the Bobcats went on to win 25-10 when Kirby put one down on an assist by Rudebusch.

Kirby led the team with ten kills while hitting .350. Perez and Quinonez each added eight kills while Martins added seven kills and hit .545.
 
Rudebusch and Grose again led the setting efforts with 28 and 11 assists respectively.
 
Gangi had three aces to lead the 'Cats while Rudebusch and Grose each adding two. Janjevic and Perez each had one service ace.
 
Gangi was the only Bobcat in double digits in digs as she finished with 11. Liewer added nine and Kelsey Young (Goodfield, Ill.) contributed eight.
 
For the first time in a long time, Peru State did not have any solo blocks. Kirby and Bowman were each credited with two while Boras and Quinonez each added one.
 
Upcoming Games
 
Peru State will play three more non-conference matches next week.
 
On Tuesday, the Bobcats will travel to Bellevue to face the Bruins of Bellevue University at 7 p.m. Currently, the Bruins are 14-10 having lost to Ashford (Iowa) on Saturday and still had to play Mount Mercy in a triangular.
 
Then, on Saturday, Peru State is traveling to Mitchell, S.D., to play in a tri-match hosted by Dakota Wesleyan. The Bobcats will face Mayville State at 12:30 p.m. The Comets are currently 6-16. Then, at 3:30 p.m., the 'Cats will take on the hosts who are presently 10-8.
