Bobcat Volleyball Tops Culver-Stockton

(Peru, Neb.) – On Senior and Parents Day, the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat volleyball team did not disappoint their fans as they stopped the visiting Culver-Stockton College Wildcats (CSC) 25-19, 20-25, 25-10, 25-9.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), putting them in a tie for fifth with Graceland University with one game to go in regular season play.    Overall, the Bobcats are 11-16 putting together a four-game winning streak.  The Wildcats fell to 1-7 in the HAAC and 7-25 overall.

Both of the first two sets were back and forth with PSC eventually pulling away for the win in the first set with Culver-Stockton doing the same in the second.  Between the second and third games, Bobcat volleyball coach Lexie Baack strongly encouraged her team to regain their focus and they did just that as they came out and put together two well-played sets to capture the win.
Courtney Jurek sets Carly Morehead
Jessie Clark (Omaha) and Carly Morehead (Fairbury) each had 13 kills to lead PSC to the win.  Morehead added two service aces, two solo blocks, five block assists, and seven digs.  Clark also had one service ace, four digs, and four block assists.  Maddy Lister  (North Platte) contributed 11 kills and two digs as all three of the leading hitters hit over .300 in the win.    As a team, the Bobcats finished hitting .285.

Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) and Amanda Gilreath (Omaha) led the setting efforts with 22 and 18 assists respectively.  Each setter had one kill while Gilreath adding one service ace.  Jurek finished with nine digs with Gilreath adding four.

Defensively, PSC was led by Emily Maresh (Central City) who had 18 digs.  Maresh also added a service ace during the game while having some tough serves keeping the Wildcats from having good sets. Kelsey Monahan (Atkinson) and Becky Boshart (Wood River) finished with 13 and 11 digs respectively.

Rachel Rippe (Johnson) had two solo blocks, five block assists, and added four kills.

Coach Baack was pleased with the win.  Baack said, “I did have to get on the girls a little after the second game, but they did come back with great focus.  We need to play with the same focus next Tuesday when we take on Baker.”

The Bobcats will travel to Baldwin City, Kan., to face the Baker University Wildcats next Tuesday for the final regular season game of the year.  The following Saturday, Nov. 5, opens HAAC tournament play.   It appears that even with a win that the Bobcats would be on the road for the first round of conference play unless some help goes their way.
