(Omaha, Neb.)- The Peru State women's basketball team came up just short in a back-and-forth battle Thursday night, falling 66-63 to Doane (Neb.) in a neutral-site matchup at the College of Saint Mary.
The Bobcats built a double-digit lead early in the second half, but the Tigers rallied behind a dominant effort from Megan Chambers, who finished with 36 points and 14 rebounds to lift Doane to the narrow win.
Peru State shot 40 percent from the field and an impressive 47 percent from beyond the arc, but free throws and turnovers proved costly down the stretch. The Bobcats led 36-28 at halftime and by as many as 12 points midway through the third quarter before Doane closed the game on a 21-12 run.
Erison Vonderschmidt continued her hot start to the season, pacing the Bobcats with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting while adding seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Kylie Diaz notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists, while Savannah Bingham contributed 11 points and knocked down two triples.
Katelyn Sanders and Tiara Dodd provided sparks off the bench with five and four points, respectively, as Peru State's depth helped maintain momentum throughout much of the contest.
As a team, the Bobcats finished with 17 assists and 41 rebounds, including 14 on the offensive glass, but were outscored 25-5 at the free-throw line.
