Peru State Football Notches First Win at Missouri Baptist in Shootout

(Peru, Neb.)--The Peru State football team earned its first win on Saturday afternoon at Missouri Baptist 43-32. The Bobcats are now 1-4 overall and the Spartans fall to 0-4 overall.

Below is the breakdown of how the game went…

Both teams would have a possession before the Bobcats would get the scoring started. On Peru State's second possession  Keyon Henry-Brooks (Powder Springs, Ga.) had runs of 12, 15 and 19-yards the last one resulting in a touchdown. Peru State led 7-0.

Missouri Baptist would go three-and-out on its next possession and then Jordan Kempf (Arlington, Tex.) returned the punt 46 yards to give the Bobcats good field position. Peru State then completed two passes on fourth down from Colin Shields (Wichita, Kan.) to Kempf the first time and the next connection would be to Saulmon Evans (Atlanta, Ga.).

Shields then scampered for 22-yards on a long third down play down to the one-yard line. Torrey Patterson (Georgia) scored on a one-yard touchdown to make the score 14-0.

Early in the second quarter the Spartans would score on a safety as the Bobcats had a snap go over its head and had to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone.

On the ensuing Spartan possession they scored on a 58-yard touchdown strike as it was now 14-9. Missouri Baptist then would take the lead with a 56-yard touchdown pass during its next possession to make the score 15-14.

Peru State would recover a muffed punt from the Spartans setting themselves up with good field position. Recovering the muffed punt was Mason Benjamin (Beaumont, Tex.). Shields late in the first half would have a touchdown pass to Kaleb Herbel (Lee's Summit, Mo.) The Bobcats would also score on a two-point conversion attempt right before the half to make the score 22-15.

In the beginning of the third quarter it looked as if the Bobcats had an interception in the end zone but a penalty had the Spartans retain possession. They would capitalize with a six-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 22.

The Bobcats and Spartans would then stall out for the next few possessions. Late in the third quarter Peru State would get help from 30-yards in penalties. Then a 38-yard touchdown pass from Shields to Kempf with a one-handed grab would make the score 29-22.

Missouri Baptist had a 47-yard pass on its next possession then a 12-yard touchdown pass tied the game at 29.

Peru State's offensive air raid attack would keep the pedal down as a 26-yard touchdown pass to Herbel made the score 36-29. The Spartans had a 14-play 70-yard drive that culminated in a field goal to make the score 36-32.

The Bobcats put the icing on the cake late in the fourth quarter as Henry-Brooks scored on a 54-yard rushing touchdown.

Peru State picked up its first win 43-32 over Missouri Baptist.

Shields went 18-of-30 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Henry-Brooks led the team in rushing with 15 rushes for 139 yards averaging 9.3 yards per carry and two touchdowns. Herbel had eight catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
