Box Score 2 (Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team fell in its final home doubleheader of the season on Saturday, April 29, against William Penn. The Bobcats lost the first game 6-1 and the second game 8-3.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the final series went…
Game 1 L 6-1 vs. William Penn
William Penn got the scoring started early after two early base runners reached on an error. An RBI single scored the first run of the game for the Statesmen. Later in the inning another RBI single made the score 2-0. William Penn scored two runs on two hits two errors and left two on base.
Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) hit a two-out single to left but a groundout ended the first.
The Statesmen hit a leadoff single in the top of the second and then moved a runner into scoring position from a sac bunt to third. A productive groundout scored the third run of the game for William Penn making the score 3-0. The Statesmen scored one run on two hits and left two on.
Peru State went three up three down in the home half of the second. William Penn reached on an error in the top of the third but was unable to get any runners across the plate. Peru State went down in order in the third.
William Penn had runners on first and second in the top of the fourth from a hit by pitch and a walk. Then a sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position. A pop-up and a groundout to short ended the half inning.
Dreyer hit a triple to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit an RBI single as the Bobcats drew within two trailing 3-1. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on in the fourth.
William Penn hit a leadoff single in the fifth and then another single had runners on first and second. Later in the inning the Statesmen had runners on the corners but a flyout to center ended the inning.
Peru State went down in order in the fifth. William Penn had runners at first and second after a sac bunt and a walk. Then an RBI single scored the fourth run of the game for the Statesmen. A single to short later in the inning loaded the bases for William Penn.
A two RBI single scored two more for the Statesmen but the Bobcats were able to tag the runner out heading for second to end the inning. William Penn scored three runs on four hits and left one on in the sixth.
Peru State went down in order in the home half of the sixth inning. William Penn did not have much happening from them offensively in the top of the seventh. Wilke hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh but was later out in a fielder's choice situation. Peru State lost the game 6-1.
Bailey Bitz (Ravenna) took the loss pitching seven innings giving up six runs on 11 hits five runs were earned.
Dreyer and Wilke led the way with two hits apiece. Wilke had the lone RBI.
Game 2 L 8-3 vs. William Penn
The Statesmen had their leadoff hitter reach first on an error and then a sac bunt moved the runner over to second. Late in the first inning an RBI single to center field scored the first run of the game. William Penn scored one run on one hit an error and left one on.
Wilke drew a two-out walk in the home half of the first then she stole second to get into scoring position. A strikeout ended the half inning. William Penn went three up three down in the top of the second.
Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) and
Andrea Page (Palisade) drew back-to-back walks in the top of the bottom of the second.
Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa) reached on a fielder's choice as the Bobcats had runners on the corners.
Maddie Howard (Council Bluffs, Iowa) singled to third as Peru State now had the bases loaded.
Camryn Craddock (Waverly) hit an RBI single to tie the game at one. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left two on in the bottom of the second.
William Penn had its leadoff hitter draw a walk and then an error had runners in scoring position. A productive groundout made the score 2-1 Statesmen. Then a wild pitch made the score 3-1 William Penn. The Statesmen scored two runs in the top of the third.
Peru State went down in order in the home half of the third inning. William Penn reached on an error and then a singled bunt and a throwing error had runners in scoring position. The Statesmen scored on a sac-fly out to center field to make the score 4-1. William Penn scored one run on one hit an error and left one on.
Rothschild hit a leadoff double into left center in the home half of the fourth; she would advance to third on a wild pitch. Two strikeouts and a groundout left the runner stranded. William Penn went down in order in the fifth.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. William Penn hit a leadoff single in the top of the sixth. Then later in the inning a single down the right field line had runners on the corners. Then a productive groundout scored the fifth run of the game for the Statesmen. William Penn scored one run on two hits and left one on base.
Peru State went three up three down in the sixth inning. The Statesmen loaded the bases in the top of the seventh from two singles and a walk. William Penn scored its sixth and seventh runs of the game on an error by the left fielder. Later in the inning an RBI single made the score 8-1 Statesmen. William Penn scored three runs on three hits an error and left two on base.
Page hit a leadoff single in the home half of the seventh. Gordon hit a double down the left field line as the Bobcats had runners in scoring position. Howard had a productive groundout as Peru State scored its second run of the game. Craddock had a productive groundout to make the score 8-3. A lineout to third ended the game.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) took the loss pitching a complete game, striking out one batter giving up eight runs on seven hits six were earned.
Craddock, Gordon Howard, Page and Rothschild all recorded a hit. Craddock led the way with two RBIs.
Peru State finished the season 7-37 overall and 4-22 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. The Bobcats did not qualify for the Heart Conference Tournament.
