(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State baseball team was swept by William Penn in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23. The Bobcats are now 12-23 overall and 9-17 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how the series went…
Game 1 L 4-3 @ William Penn
Jacob Aberg (Lincoln) and
Will Reynolds hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the game but Aberg was thrown out at third. A strikeout and a pop-up ended the inning. William Penn went three up three down in the home half of the first.
Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) hit a one-out single to center but a strikeout and a groundout to second ended the half inning. The Statesmen had two runners on in the bottom of the second from a single and a walk but left both runners on base as it was still knotted at zero.
The Bobcats went three up three down in the top of the third. William Penn broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. It started with a one-out double to right, then an RBI single made the score 1-0 William Penn. Later in the inning the Statesmen were able to score on a passed ball. William Penn scored two runs on three hits and left one on.
Peru State went down in order in the top of the fourth inning. The Statesmen also went 1-2-3 in the fourth. Not much offense happened for either team in the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth Aberg hit a leadoff double into right field.
Josue Vazquez (Salinas, P.R.) drew a two-out walk.
Yodelvy Garcia (Santiago, D.R.) hit a two RBI double to left field to tie the game at 2 apiece.
Andrades hit an RBI single as the Bobcats took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. Peru State scored three runs on three hits and left one on base. The lead was short lived as William Penn had runners on first and second after a single and a hit by pitch. An RBI single tied the game at three apiece. William Penn scored one run on two hits and left two on.
Randy Jimenez (Santiago De Los Caballeros) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh Jimenez would steal second and advanced to third but three strikeouts ended the inning. The Statesmen hit a leadoff double and then hit a walk off single gave William Penn the 4-3 victory.
Kevin Diaz (Dominican Republic) took the loss pitching six innings striking out eight batters giving up three earned runs on eight hits.
Fernando Falero (Carolina, P.R.) pitched in relief giving up one run on two hits.
Aberg and Andrades led the way with two hits each. Garcia led the way with two RBIs.
Game 2 L 4-3 (F/8) @ William Penn
Aberg in the top of the first inning in the second game reached on an error then a single from Wes Bradford
(Bakersfield, Calif.) had runners on first and second. Both runners advanced into scoring position via a passed ball.
Aberg scored the first run of the game via a passed ball. Garcia then belted an RBI double into right field to make the score 2-0. Peru State scored two runs on two hits an error and one left base.
William Penn got one back in the first after two doubles scored the first run of the game for the Statesmen. William Penn scored one run on two hits and left one on.
Jimenez hit a one out single in the top of the second but was then later caught stealing.
Ivan Medina (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Aberg both drew walks but a pop up ended the Bobcats inning.
William Penn went three up three down in the home half of the second inning. Peru State went down in order in the top of the third. The Statesmen had a one out walk and then a single to right field but the runner who got on via a walk was headed for home and was thrown out from right field to second base to the catcher. The score stayed 2-1 after three.
Jimenez hit a two out single to left in the top of the fourth inning and then Medina reached on an error by the third baseman and Jimenez scored to make the score 3-1. Peru State scored one run on one hit an error and left one on base.
William Penn in the home half of the fourth had runners on the corners with two outs and then a wild pitch scored the second run of the game for the Statesmen. William Penn trailed 3-2 after four innings of play.
Reynolds and Vazquez both hit singles in the top of the fifth as there were runners on the corners. Then Vazquez stole second to have runners in scoring position. A strikeout and a lineout ended the half inning.
William Penn got a two out rally going with a double to right field. Then an RBI single tied the game at three apiece. The Statesmen scored one run on two hits and left one on in the home half of the fifth.
Peru State could not get much going on offense outside of walk in the top of the sixth. The Statesmen hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth. Then the runner was 90-feet away from the plate but a pop-up and a groundout ended the inning.
Reynolds hit a leadoff single in the top of the seventh last night but was later called out on a fielder's choice. Vazquez walked with one out but then a double play ended the half inning for the Bobcats.
William Penn hit a one out single in the home half of the seventh inning but was caught stealing. A walk and a hit by pitch had runners on first and second but a groundout ended the inning.
Efrain Torres (Aibonito, P.R.) hit a one-out single in the top of eighth but a foul out and a strikeout ended the top of the eighth.
William Penn hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning. A sac bunt moved the runner over to second. Then a walk off RBI single had the Statesmen win the game 4-3. William Penn scored one run on two hits and left one on base.
Micah McLeod (Franklin County, Fla.) took the loss pitching five innings striking out four batters giving up three earned runs.
Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) pitched 2.1 innings relief striking out one batter giving up one earned run on four hits.
Jimenez and Reynolds each had two hits. Garcia had the lone RBI.
Game 3 L 8-3 @ William Penn
Aberg hit a leadoff double but later was out in a lineout double play situation. William Penn scored in the bottom of the first after back-to-back singles to make the score 1-0. The Statesmen scored one run on two hits and left two on.
Garcia drew a one out walk in the second but was out on a double play. The Statesmen scored three more runs in the home half of the second. The first was on a walk after the bases were loaded to make the score 2-0. A two RBI single made the score 4-0 William Penn. The Statesmen were up 4-0 after two innings of play.
Peru State could not get much going in the top of the third inning offensively. William Penn also did not have much going offensively in the home half of the third. Bradford hit a one out double to left. Then Vazquez hit an RBI double to right to make the score 4-1. Garcia then hit an RBI single to make the score 4-2. Peru State scored two runs on three hits and left one on base.
William Penn had a single and a walk for the Statesmen in fourth but a groundout left the runners stranded.
Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) hit a leadoff double and made it to third from a ground out but a pop-up ended the top of the fifth.
The Statesmen scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning the first an RBI double into left made the score 5-2 William Penn. Then an error scored the sixth run of the game for the Statesmen. Two more RBI singles made the score 8-2. William Penn scored four runs on four hits an error and left two on in the home half of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning Garcia reached on a fielder's choice and Andrades singled to second. Garcia then stole third. Garcia scored Peru State's third run of the game on a wild pitch making the score 8-3.
William Penn hit a single in the bottom of the sixth but was not able to get any offense across the plate outside of that. Peru State went three up three down to end the game.
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) took the loss pitching 4.2 innings striking out five batters giving up eight runs on seven hits only two of the runs were earned.
Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched 1.1 innings striking out a batter giving up three hits and no runs.
Francisco led the way with two hits. Garcia and Vazquez each had an RBI.
Game 4 L 8-3 @ William Penn
Reynolds and Bradford each singled in the top of the first inning but then a double play ended the top of the first. William Penn got a two out rally going in the second with a single and then an RBI double scored the first run of the game. The Statesmen scored one run on two hits and left one on.
Garcia hit a leadoff home run to right field to tie the game at one. Then three straight groundouts ended the inning. William Penn went three up three down in the home half of the second.
Josue Cisnero (Santo Domingo, D.R.) hit a leadoff home run to center as the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning Bradford hit a home run to right to make the score 3-1 Peru State. The Bobcats scored two runs on two hits in the top of the third.
William Penn hit a leadoff double in the home half of the third inning. The Statesmen scored their second run of the game via an error to make it 3-2. Then the bases were loaded and a drawn walk tied the game at three apiece. A sac-fly scored the fourth run of the game for William Penn. The Statesmen scored three runs on one hit two errors and left two on.
Peru State's hot bats cooled off in the top of the fourth. The Statesmen started to pull away in the bottom of the fourth. William Penn hit a leadoff double. Then a bunt had runners on the corner. Then a squeeze play made the score 5-3 Statesmen. William Penn blasted a three-run home run over the right field fence with two outs to take an 8-3 lead.
Cisnero hit a leadoff single in the top of the fifth and then a sac bunt moved him into scoring position. Cisnero was 90-feet away from the plate after a groundout but a groundout to third ended the inning.
William Penn was only able to muster a single in the fifth and the runner was later caught stealing. Peru State went three up three down in the top of the sixth. William Penn went down in order in the home half of the sixth inning.
Francisco and Cisnero both hit singles in the top of the seventh but a flyout to center ended any hopes of a Bobcat comeback.
Sergio Benitez-Clemente (Carolina, P.R.) took the loss pitching three innings striking out two batters giving up five runs on four hits three were earned. Falero pitched two innings in relief striking out one batter giving up three earned runs on three hits.
Jan Vargas (Juncos, P.R.) tossed one inning striking out a batter.
Bradford and Cisnero each had two hits. Bradford, Cisnero and Garcia each had an RBI.
Peru State has its final homestand this weekend Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April, vs. Graceland. First pitch is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. each day.
