Peru State Softball Falls in Doubleheader vs. No. 17 Central Methodist

(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team fell in both games of the doubleheader vs. No. 17 Central Methodist on a chilly Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats lost the first game 9-0 in five innings as the Central Methodist pitcher threw a perfect game in the circle and the Bobcats lost the second game 6-1.
 
Below is a breakdown of how the doubleheader went…
 
Game 1 L 9-0 (F/5) vs. No. 17 CMU
 
In the top of the first inning Central Methodist was able to get two base runners on from a single and then a walk. A three-run home run blasted over the right center fence made the score 3-0 Eagles.
 
Later in the inning a walk and a hit by pitch had two more Eagle runners on the bags, then an RBI double into the gap scored the fourth run of the game for Central Methodist. A productive groundout made the score 5-0 Eagles. Central Methodist scored five runs on four hits and left three on.
 
Peru State went three up three down in the first. CMU hit a leadoff double into the gap in the top of the second inning. Then a two-out RBI double into right center field scored the sixth run of the game for the Eagles. CMU scored one run on three hits and left two on.
 
Peru State went down in order in the second inning. CMU loaded the bases from two walks and a single in the top of the third but the Bobcats were able to get out of the bases loaded jam. Peru State went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third.
 
The Eagles bats cooled off in the fourth inning as they were only able to get a single via a bunt. The runner advanced into scoring position from a passed ball but a flyout ended the inning. Peru State went three up three down.
 
CMU hit a leadoff double in the top of the fifth and then an error had the runner advance to third. A sac-fly to center field scored the seventh run of the game. Then a double had runners in scoring position. A two RBI single made the score 9-0 Central Methodist. The Eagles scored three runs on three hits and left one on in the fifth.
 
Two strikeouts and a flyout ended the game for the Bobcats.
 
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) took the loss pitching two innings giving up six earned runs on seven hits. Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) pitched three innings in relief striking out a batter giving up three earned runs on five hits.
 
 
Game 2 L 6-1 vs. No. 17 CMU
 
The Eagles hit a leadoff single to start the second game the runner then stole second to advance into scoring position. Two walks loaded the bases for CMU. A sac-fly into left field made the score 1-0 Eagles. Central Methodist scored one run on one hit and left two on.
 
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) hit a leadoff single to left in the home half of the first inning. Ohlde would advance into scoring position on a passed ball. Autumn Dixon (Stilwell, Kan.) drew a walk and then Kaelyn Hamblen (Papillion) singled to left field to load the bases but two strikeouts ended a promising half inning.
 
Central Methodist was able to get a two-out single but nothing across the plate. Peru State went three up three down in the bottom of the second. The Eagles hit a leadoff home run into right to go up 2-0 but the Bobcat defense bowed up after that.
 
Peru State went three up three down in the home half of the third inning. The Eagles in the top of the fourth hit back-to-back singles then a sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position. A pop-up and a fly out ended the top of the inning.
 
Hamblen singled down the left field line to start the bottom of the fourth. Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) then reached on an error. Later in the inning the runners were in scoring position and Kylee Weiss (El Dorado, Kan.) hit a sac-fly to center field as the Bobcats got the game within one trailing 2-1. Peru State scored one run on one hit an error and left one on.
 
The Eagles in the top of the fifth had runners on first and second from an error and then a single down the left field line. A three-run home run over center field made the score 5-1 Eagles. CMU scored three runs on three hits, two errors and left two on.
 
Ohlde and Jami Mans (Fairbury) drew one-out walks in the bottom of the fifth. Two strikeouts ended the inning for the Bobcats. CMU was able to get a runner on via leadoff single and the runner would make it all the way to third but was left stranded.
 
Andrea Page (Palisade) reached first on an error and then Weiss drew a walk but a strikeout and a pop-up ended the inning. Back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh inning for the Eagles led to their sixth run of the game. CMU scored one run on three hits and left two on.
 
Peru State went three up three down in the final inning.
 
Hamblen led the way with two hits in game two. Weiss had the lone RBI.
 
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) took the loss pitching a complete game, striking out two batters giving up five earned runs on 12 hits.
