Peru State Softball Drops Doubleheader vs. No. 7 Baker

(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team fell to Baker in both games on Sunday, April 23. The Bobcats lost the first game 4-0 and the second game 4-1. Peru State is now 7-33 overall and 4-18 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how the doubleheader went…
 
Game 1 L 4-0 vs. Baker
 
Baker hit a leadoff single in the top of the first the runner then stole second to advance into scoring position. An error led to the first run of the game for the Wildcats. Then the Bobcats made an incredible play out in the outfield as center fielder Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) got a flyout and threw a player out headed for the plate.
 
An error scored two more runs for Baker as they were up 3-0 early. Baker scored three runs on three hits, two errors and left one on. Peru State went three up three down in the first.
 
Baker went down in order in the top of the second. Kaelyn Hamblen (Papillion) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second. Then two fielder's choices and a strikeout ended the home half of the second.
 
The Wildcats drew a leadoff walk then a double into the right center gap scored the fourth run of the game for Baker. The Wildcats scored one run on one hit and left two on base. Peru State went three up three down in the bottom of the third.
 
Baker had runners on first and second after a single and a walk but both were left stranded. Peru State went three up three down in the home half of the fourth inning.
 
The Wildcats were able to draw a two out walk in the top of the fifth but a fielder's choice ended the half inning. Kylee Weiss (El Dorado, Kan.) reached on an error and Kylee Dieckmann (Holton, Kan.) drew a walk but a strikeout ended the inning.
 
Baker hit a leadoff single in the top of the sixth and then the runner got to third base but she would be left stranded. Peru State went three up three down in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
Baker got one aboard via a hit by pitch but the Wildcats were unable to tack on anymore runs. Wilke drew a one out walk in the bottom of the seventh. Then Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) hit a single as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. A strikeout and a groundout ended the game.
 
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) took the loss pitching a complete game, striking out two batters giving up four runs on six hits only one run was earned.
 
Rothschild had the lone hit in the game.
 
Game 2 L 4-1 vs. Baker
 
Baker drew a leadoff walk to start the second game and then runner stole second to get into scoring position. The runner advanced to third on a passed ball. An RBI single scored the first run of the game.
 
Another single had runners on first and second. The Wildcats had bases loaded later in the inning via a walk. A lineout to short ended the Baker threat. The Wildcats scored one run on two hits an error and left three on the bags.
 
Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) reached first on an error with two outs but a flyout ended the half inning. Baker drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second the runner then stole second and third to get 60-feet away from the plate. Baker tried for a squeeze bunt but the batter popped up and then the runner on third was thrown out because she was not tagged up.
 
Wilke hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the first. Autumn Dixon (Stilwell, Kan.) reached on an error as the Bobcats had runners on the corners. A fielder's choice ended the home half of the second.
 
Baker was able to get a runner into scoring position after a single and then the runner stole second. A flyout ended the Wildcat half inning. Peru State went down in order in the bottom of the third.
 
Baker had runners in scoring position after a single and a walk. Each of them had also stolen a base. The Wildcats scored their second and third runs of the game via an error in right field.
 
The Wildcats scored two runs on one hit an error and left one on base. Peru State went down in order in fourth inning. Baker hit a two out single and a stolen base had the runner in scoring position but a flyout to the shortstop ended the top of the fifth.
 
Camryn Craddock (Waverly) hit a single to second with two outs. Then Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) hit an RBI double into the left center gap to make the score 3-1 Baker. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on.
 
Baker went three up three down in the top of the sixth. Hamblen then drew a one out walk in the home half of the sixth. Wilke reached on an error at second as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. Then a lineout to third and a throw down to second had the Wildcats with a double play to get out of the jam.
 
The Wildcats hit a home run to left center with one out in the seventh as they were up 4-1. Baker scored one run on one hit and left two on. Peru State went three up three down as the game concluded.
 
Bailey Bitz (Ravenna) took the loss pitching 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and only one was earned. Dreyer pitched 3.1 innings in relief giving up one earned run on two hits.
 
Craddock, Ohlde and Wilke each had a hit. Ohlde had the lone RBI.
 
Peru State hits the road Friday, April 28, against Park first pitch is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Peru State will wrap up the regular season with a homestand vs. William Penn on Saturday, April 29. First pitch is set for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
