Peru State Softball Splits at Clarke



(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team on Saturday, April 15, split at Clarke in Dubuque, Iowa. The Bobcats won the first game 7-4 and lost the second game 7-6. Peru State is now 7-28 overall and 4-14 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how the doubleheader went…
 
Game 1 W 7-4 @ Clarke
 
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first but later a double play ended the inning for the Bobcats. Clarke drew a leadoff walk in the first but a double play and a line out to third ended the half inning for the Pride.
 
Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) hit a one-out double to left in the top of the second. Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) singled to left as the Bobcats had runners on the corners. Kylee Weiss (El Dorado, Kan.) hit an RBI double to left center field as Peru State took an early 1-0 lead.
 
 Sophia Summers (Gardner, Kan.) hit a three-run home run to left field to make the score 4-0 Bobcats. Peru State scored four runs on four hits an error and left one on in the second.
 
Clarke hit a leadoff single in the home half of the second but was not able to get much going after that. Kaelyn Hamblen (Papillion) hit a single to second but was later caught stealing. Dreyer hit a single and then Rothschild drew a walk as the Bobcats threatened with two runners on. A strikeout ended the Bobcat threat.
 
Clarke drew back-to-back walks in the bottom of the third. Later in the inning the Pride had runners in scoring position after an error and a stolen base. A productive groundout scored two runs for the Pride. Clarke scored two runs on no hits an error and left one on.
 
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) drew a leadoff walk in the fourth but later was out in a double play. Ohlde hit a two-out single but the Bobcats could not bring her home to score.
 
Clarke hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth. Then two walks loaded the bases for the Pride with only one out. A double down the left field line tied the game at 4-4. Clarke scored two runs on two hits and left two on base.
 
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a leadoff single in the top of the fifth. Later Dreyer hit a single into left as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. A lineout and a strikeout ended the inning.
 
Clarke was able to get a runner 60-feet away from the plate after she led off with a single and then advanced via a groundout and a wild pitch. A strikeout ended the inning for the Pride.
 
Summers hit a one-out double down the left field line in the top of the sixth and she advanced to third via an error from the left fielder. Ohlde then hit an RBI single into left as Peru State took a 5-4 lead.
 
Jami Mans (Fairbury) then executed a sac bunt to move Ohlde into scoring position. Wilke drew a walk as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. Hamblen then hit an RBI single into center field to make the score 6-4 Peru State. The Bobcats scored two runs on three hits an error and left two on base.
 
Clarke led off the home half of the sixth with a leadoff single, then a walk had runners on first and second. A single loaded the bases. The Bobcats were able to get the second out of the inning at home preventing the runner to score. A groundout ended the Clarke threat.
 
Rothschild drew a leadoff walk then Andrea Page (Palisade) came into pinch hit and singled to center. Summers hit an RBI single later in the seventh inning to make the score 7-4. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left two on base.
 
Clarke hit a leadoff double in the home half of the seventh inning. Two groundouts and a strikeout ended the game as Peru State won the first game 7-4.
 
Dreyer took the win pitching five innings in relief striking out three batters giving up two earned runs on six hits. Wessel pitched two innings giving up two runs on one hit only was earned.
 
Dreyer and Summers had three hits apiece. Summers led the way with four RBIs.
 
 
Game 2 L 7-6 @ Clarke
 
Ohlde was hit by a pitch to start the second game and she would later score after a fielder's choice. Hamblen with one-out hit a single to second. A strikeout and a groundout ended the inning. Peru State scored one run one on one hit an error and left two on.
 
Clarke hit back-to-back singles with one out in the first, a fielder's choice and a ground out ended the Pride threat. Camryn Craddock (Waverly) hit a two-out single to center but a foul out ended the inning. Clarke was only able to get one hit in the home half of the second.
 
Mans hit a leadoff single in the top of the third. Then a sac bunt by Autumn Dixon (Stilwell, Kan.) moved the runner into scoring position. Dreyer then hit an RBI single into right field to make the score 2-0 Bobcats. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on.
 
Clarke drew a leadoff walk in the third and the base runner then stole second. An RBI single scored the first run of the game from the Pride. Clarke tied the game with a single to left and an error. Then another RBI single gave the Pride a 3-2 lead. Clarke scored three runs on three hits an error and left one on base.
 
Craddock hit a two-out single to left center but a flyout ended the half inning for the Bobcats in the fourth. A two-out RBI single gave Clarke a 4-2 lead in the home half of the fourth inning.
 
Dixon hit a one-out single to short in the top of the fifth. Then a single by Hamblen had runners on the corners. Dreyer hit an RBI double to left center scoring a run for the Bobcats. Peru State flew out twice to end the inning. The Bobcats scored one run on three hits and left two on the bags.
 
Clarke went three up three down in the home half of the fifth.
 
Allie Grimm (Saint Joseph, Mo.) came into pinch hit and delivered with a leadoff double down the left field line. Maddie Howard (Council Bluffs, Iowa) came into pinch run and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Craddock then hit an RBI double to left center tying the game at four apiece. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on base.
 
Clarke went down in order in the home half of the sixth.
 
Hamblen hit a leadoff single to right in the top of the seventh. Dreyer then hit a double down the left field line and gave the Bobcats the lead with an RBI. Howard later reached on an error as Dreyer would come into score. Peru State now led 6-4. The Bobcats scored two runs on two hits an error and left one on.
 
Clarke hit a leadoff single in the seventh and the runner advanced to second on an error. Then another single had runners on first and second. A sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position. A single to the short stop scored the fifth run of the game for the Pride.
 
A single through the right side tied the game at six apiece. Clarke walked it off via an error in short, winning the game 7-6. Clarke scored three runs on four hits two errors and left two on.
 
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) took the loss. She pitched four innings striking out three batters giving up four earned runs on six hits. Bailey Bitz (Ravenna) pitched 2.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits two were earned.
 
Craddock, Dreyer and Hamblen each had three hits. Dreyer led the way in RBIs with three.
 
Peru State returns home for its final nonconference game of the year on Wednesday, April 19, to face Bellevue. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
