Box Score 2 (Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team dropped its doubleheader to Briar Cliff on Wednesday, March 22, losing the first game 2-0 and the second game 3-1. The Bobcats are now 2-13 overall while the Chargers improve to 16-6 overall.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the doubleheader went…
Game 1 vs. Briar Cliff L 2-0
It was a defensive battle in game one as runs were hard to come by for both teams. Not much happened offensively for either team in the first inning. In the second inning Briar Cliff was threatening with runners on first and second after an error and a walk.
Pitcher
Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) made a heads-up defensive playing getting the go-ahead runner out at third and then a line out would end the half inning. Peru State was able to draw two walks in the bottom of the second but still did not get anyone around to score.
Dreyer then made another outstanding play in the top third as the batter lined out to the pitcher and then she got the baserunner out at first to end the inning on a double play. The Bobcats went three up three down in the home half of the third inning.
Both teams went down in order in the fourth inning. Both teams struggled to score all game as the score sat dormant for the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the seventh inning the Chargers were able to load the bases.
Peru State was able to get a force out at home to keep the score knotted at 0, then with two outs the Chargers hit a two RBI single to make the score 2-0.
The Bobcats went down in order in the home half of the seventh inning.
Dreyer took the loss pitching a complete game striking out five batters giving up two runs on eight hits only one run was earned.
Game 2 vs. Briar Cliff L 3-1
The Chargers got on the board immediately in the second game of the doubleheader. A two out RBI single made the score 1-0 Chargers early. The struggles at the plate continued for the Bobcats in game two as they were only able to draw a walk in the first inning.
Briar Cliff hit a leadoff double in the top of the second then an RBI single made the score 2-0 Chargers. The Chargers scored one run on three hits and left one on in the top of the second.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second inning. Briar Cliff was able to load the bases in the third from an error, a single and a walk. A flyout ended the Chargers inning leaving the bases juiced.
Peru State final broke through the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) hit a leadoff double. She later stole third to get 60-feet from the plate. Dixon would end up scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1.
Briar Cliff scored its third and final run of the game in the top of the fifth from an RBI single as the Chargers now led 3-1. The Bobcats went down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Chargers threatened again in the top of the sixth after a double and reaching on an error. A strikeout ended the half inning. Peru State went three up three down in the sixth inning.
The Bobcats and Chargers both went down in order in the seventh inning.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) took the loss pitching a complete game striking out three batters giving up three runs on nine hits two of which were earned.
Dixon led the way in hits with one.
Peru State opens conference play at home this Friday with a doubleheader against Evangel. First pitch is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
