Peru State Women’s Basketball Defeats Benedictine 73-55 on Wednesday Evening

(Peru, Neb.)—Peru State women's basketball team picked up its ninth win of the season with a 73-55 victory over Benedictine College on Wednesday night. The Bobcats improve to 9-16 overall and 5-14 in Heart of America Athletic Conference while the Ravens fall to 8-17 overall and 5-14 in conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how the game went…
 
Benedictine started out up 6-2 in the first quarter, then neither team could get much of an offense going in the middle part of the first. Peru State then went on a quick 6-2 run to tie the game at eight apiece.
 
Contributing to the run were baskets by Kaylan Larry (Little Rock, Ark.) and Olivia Williams (Minneapolis, Minn.). The Bobcats took their first lead with under a minute to go after Danielle Howard (Uniontown, Kan.) hit two free throws.
 
Peru State took a 13-10 lead going into the second quarter of play. The Ravens opened up the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take an 18-13 lead with around seven minutes to play.
 
The Bobcats got the game back within two after a Sam Stewart (Mount Ayr, Iowa) layup as they trailed 18-16. The Ravens then went on a 6-0 run as they stretched the lead to 24-16. Peru State then turned it on the rest of the half as they finished the second quarter on a 9-2 run.
 
Contributing to the run were buckets by Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa), Larry, Ingram and a three by Duncan.
 
Peru State trailed 26-25 at the half.
 
The Bobcats out of the break regained the lead after a Julie Miller (Easton, Kan.) two leading 27-26 a minute into the third quarter. The Bobcats and Ravens traded buckets back-and-forth for the next few minutes.
 
Benedictine got its lead out to four a few times in the middle of the third quarter. The Ravens were leading 35-31 with around seven minutes to play in the third. Larry a few moments later tied the game at 35 before the Bobcats went on their next big run.
 
A bit later in the third the Bobcats went on an 8-1 run capped off by a jumper from Jescenia Mosley (Shenandoah, Iowa). Peru State was leading 44-36 with under two minutes to play in the quarter.
 
Peru State would go into the fourth up eight leading 48-40.
 
The Bobcats got their lead out to 12 points early in the fourth after a Miller jump shot and free throws from Mosley as they were up 52-40 two minutes into the fourth.
 
The Ravens would get within ten a few times in the next couple of minutes as they trailed 54-44. Peru State then went on a 16-4 run to take 70-48 lead with under four to play in the game.
 
Contributing to the run were baskets by Josiee Sobotka (Tobias), Stewart,  Larry, two threes by Ingram and free throws by Williams.
 
Peru State won the game 73-55.
 
Peru State shot 27-of-61 from the field shooting 44.3%, 3-of-15 from deep shooting 20% and 16-18 from the charity stripe shooting 88.9%.
 
Benedictine shot 20-of-49 shooting 40.8%, 3-of-11 from beyond the arc shooting 27.3% and 12-of-15 from the free throw line shooting 80%.
 
Peru State outscored Benedictine 34-32 in the paint, 21-4 in points off turnovers and 32-19 in bench points.
 
Larry led the way in points with 18, Ingram finished with 14 and Mosley put in 12. Mosley led the team in rebounds with eight. Larry also finished with five steals.
 
Peru State hits the road to face Missouri Valley College this Saturday, February 11, tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
