(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State men's basketball team continues its winning ways on the road as they defeated Culver-Stockton 70-61 on Saturday evening. The Bobcats now boast a 7-1 record away from home.
The Bobcats are now 15-5 overall and 10-4 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Wildcats fall to 7-12 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how the game went…
The Bobcats had an early 14-9 lead after a
Jibril Harris (Chicago) lay-in with 14 minutes left in the first half. Culver-Stockton would tie the game at 14 all in the next three minutes.
Peru State then went on a 6-0 run of its own to take a 20-14 lead. Contributing to the run were baskets by
Lorenzo Anderson (Lithonia, Ga.),
Sayvon Traylor (Atlanta) and
David Wingett Jr. (Winnebago).
The Wildcats would then close the lead to a few times in the second half but could not tie or take the lead against the Bobcats. Peru State went on a 9-0 run to take a 31-20 lead after a layup from Harris with under five minutes to play in the half.
Peru State would hold Culver-Stockton to six points for the final five minutes of the first half as they took a 40-26 lead going into halftime after an and-one from
Troy Houghton (Omaha).
To start the second half the Wildcats would cut the lead down to ten as they now trailed 44-34 with 16 minutes left. Peru State then went on a 8-3 run to take a 52-37 lead after free throws from Harris.
The Bobcats would get their lead out to 16 after Wingett Jr. hit a three pointer to make the score 57-41 with under ten minutes to play in the game. Culver-Stockton had one last run in them as they cut the lead down to six on a 9-0 run as they were down just two possessions 57-51 with five and change to go.
Peru State hit a huge three by Harris to go up 62-51 with under four minutes to play. The Bobcats staved off the Wildcats run and hung on for the 70-61 victory.
Peru State shot 27-of-51 from the field shooting 52.9%, 5-of-18 from beyond the arc shooting 27.8% and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe shooting 78.6%.
Culver-Stockton shot 24-of-57 from the field shooting 42.1%, 8-of-22 from deep shooting 36.4% and 5-5 from the line shooting 100%.
Peru State outscored Culver-Stockton 42-20 on points in the paint, 15-6 in points off turnovers and Culver-Stockton outscored Peru State in bench points 4-2.
Harris led the way in scoring with 24, Houghton finished with 17 and Wingett Jr. had 15. Harris and Wingett Jr. tied for the lead in rebounds with nine each.
Man Man Baker (Aurora, Colo.) led the way in assists with five.
Peru State is at home next Wednesday, January 25 to face Grand View. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
