Peru State Softball Swept by MidAmerica Nazarene


(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State Softball team was swept by MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-4  and 13-3. The Bobcats are now 9-18 overall and 4-12 in Heart conference play while the Pioneers are 23-7 and 14-4 in conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of the doubleheader from Saturday…
 
Game 1
 
The top of the first started with a leadoff single for the Pioneers and then the baserunner would steal second to get into scoring position. A one out single scored the first run of the game. A spectacular double play by the pitcher Alana Krieser (Lincoln) ended the inning for the Pioneers as they scored one run on two hits and left one on.
 
The Bobcats were able to get a two out single from Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) but were not able to get anything else in the inning. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
MNU started the top of the second with a leadoff single. Then a one out single would have runners on first and second. The next batter bounced into a fielder' choice as the 'Cats were able to get the lead runner at third. The Pioneers were unable to bring any base runners' home as they had no runs on two hits and left two on.
 
Jerica German (Cortland) hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the second but was bounced later in a fielder's choice. Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) drew a walk but a fly out and a ground out would end the second inning for the 'Cats. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left two on.
 
The Pioneers started the top of the third inning with a leadoff double. Then a single had MNU threatening with runners on the corners. A productive groundout scored the second run of the game for the Pioneers. Then a single would make the score 3-0. The Pioneers scored two runs on three hits and left two on in the third.
 
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) drew a leadoff walk but then a fielder's choice and two groundouts would make it a quick bottom half. Peru State scored no runs on no hits and left one on in the third.
 
MNU started the fourth by reaching on an error. They would draw a two out walk later in the inning but a strike out and two ground outs would end the threat from the Pioneers. MNU had no runs on no hits and left two on.
 
German led the bottom of the fourth with a single. She was then bounced in a fielder's choice on the next at-bat. Jessye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark.) was hit by a pitch with two down. The Bobcat runners were stranded as they had no runs on one hit and left two on.
 
MNU managed two singles in the top of the fifth inning but were unable to bring the baserunners around to score. The Pioneers had no runs on two hits and left two on base.
 
Ohlde, Wilke and Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) hit three singles to load the bases for the 'Cats. Carli Kohout (Cortland) hit a three run double to tie the game at three for Peru State. Rothschild with two down gave the 'Cats the lead as she hit an RBI single to bring in Kohout.
 
 Rowland then hit a single but the 'Cats left her stranded. Peru State scored four runs on six hits and left two on in the fifth.
 
MNU led the top of the sixth off with a single and the baseruuner would steal second. Then after a groundout moved the baserunner 60-feet away from the plate. A walk had the Pioneers threatening with runners on the corners.
 
Then a single would have MNU tie the game at four. The Pioneers scored one run on two hits and left two on.
 
Ohlde reached first on an error to the start the sixth for the 'Cats. Then Beckmann flew out into a double play. Two singles from Wilke and Kohout had the Bobcats threatening. Both would advance into scoring position from a wild pitch.
 
German drew a walk to load the bases for Peru State. Unfortunately, a fly out to right field would end the promising inning. The 'Cats had no runs on two hits an error and left the bases juiced in the sixth.
 
The Pioneers tried to get a two out rally going in the final inning with a single and then a fielder's choice had everyone safe as MNU threatened with runners on first and second.
 
A strikeout would end the Pioneer threat. MNU had no runs on one hit and left two on in the top of the seventh.
 
Rothschild led of the home half of the final inning with a single. She would move over to second from a sac bunt and then stole third to get 60-feet away from the plate. Two groundouts would end the inning as the Pioneers and the Bobcats headed to extra innings. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
The Pioneers started the extra inning with a single and then the baserunner would advance to second on a wild pitch. Two walks would load the bases for MNU.
 
A one out walk would give the Pioneers a 5-4 lead. A pop out and a fly out ended the top half of the eighth. MNU scored one run on one hit and left the bases loaded.
 
Beckmann started the home half of the extra frame with a single. Two groundouts had Beckmann 60-feet away from home with a chance to tie. A third ground out of the inning would end the game as the 'Cats lost to the Pioneers 5-4 in game one.
 
Krieser pitched seven innings striking out four batters giving up five runs on 13 hits only five runs were earned. Layla Worthington (Holladay, Utah) threw one inning striking out one batter giving up no runs on no hits.
 
Wilke led the way in hits as she had three in game one. Kohout had the lead in RBIs with three from her double.
 
Game 2
 
MNU started game two with a leadoff single. Then a double had Pioneer runners in scoring position. Then back-to-back sac flies scored two MNU runners. The Pioneers scored two runs on two hits and left no one on.
 
Ohlde started the home half of the first with a leadoff triple. Then a one out walk from Wilke had the 'Cats threatening with runners on the corners.
 
Kohout then hit a double sending Ohlde and Wilke home tying the game at two. The 'Cats scored two runs on two hits and left one on in the first.
 
The Pioneers with one out in the top of the second retook the lead from a solo home run as they now led 3-2. That would be the only run and hit for MNU in the second inning.
 
Rowland hit a one out single in the bottom of the second, but a double play would end the home half of the second inning for Peru State. The 'Cats had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
MNU started the third inning with a single and then the baserunner stole second. A single would put runners on the corners for the Pioneers. MNU tried the double steal but the 'Cats got the out at the plate. MNU scored no runs on two hits and left one on in the third.
 
Peru State tried to start a two out rally from a Wilke single and a walk by Kohout. The 'Cats left the runners on base as they had no runs on one hit and left two on base.
 
MNU led off the fourth with a single, the base runner would later score on a throwing error. The Pioneers loaded the bases from a hit by pitch a walk and single. The 'Cats ended the threat from a pop out and a fly out. MNU scored one run on two hits an error and left the bases loaded.
 
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) started the home half of the fourth with a double then a single from Rothschild had the 'Cats with runners on the corners. Then a sac fly to center from Rowland brought the 'Cats within one as Wessel came into score.
 
Peru State threatened again after a fielder's choice and a single put runners on first and second. The baserunners would be stranded as the Bobcats had one run on three hits and left two on in the fourth.
 
MNU with one out in the fifth threatened with runners on first and second from a hit by pitch and a single. Then another single would bring a Pioneer runner into score as they now led 5-3. A three-run shot on the next at-bat extended the Pioneer lead by five as they led 8-3.
 
Then with two outs three straight singles from the Pioneers scored another run as they now led 9-3. MNU scored five runs on six hits and left two on base.
 
German hit a single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Peru State would leave the baserunner stranded as the had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
MNU started the sixth inning with two singles as they threatened with runners on first and second. A one out walk would load the bases for the Pioneers.
 
Then a single scored the tenth run of the game for MNU. A sac fly put the Pioneers up 11-3. On the next at-bat a double brought two more runners into score as the Pioneer lead grew to ten. MNU scored four runs on four hits and left one on.
 
The Bobcats went three up three down as they lost 13-3 in six innings to the Pioneers.
 
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched 4.2 innings giving up eight runs on ten hits seven of the runs were earned. Worthington pitched 1.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits and all five runs were earned.
 
Ohlde led the way in hits with two. Kohout led the way in RBIs with two and she had five on the day.
 
Peru State will face Park Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
