(Peru, Neb.)—On Sunday, April 10, the Peru State softball team split with the Park Pirates losing the first game 6-2 but bouncing back for a 7-4 win in game two. The Bobcats are now 10-19 overall and 5-13 in Heart conference play while the Pirates are 16-14 and 10-10 in conference play.
Below is breakdown of how each game of the doubleheader went…
Game 1
In the first inning there was not much action as both teams went three up three down. Park led the second inning off with a single but a double play later in the inning would limit any damage the Pirates tried to create.
The 'Cats went down in order for the second inning in a row. The Pirates started the top of third inning with a hit by pitch and a single as they threatened with runners on first and second. Then a ground out moved the runners into scoring position.
A productive ground out and a throwing error scored the first two runs of the game for Park. The Pirates had two runs on one hit and left no one on.
Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the third for the 'Cats.
Jessye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark.) walked as Peru State threatened with runners on first and second.
Mya Mathes (Ankeny, Iowa) moved the runners over with a ground out. Then a wild pitch scored Rothschild.
Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) with two outs hit an RBI single to tie the game at two for the Bobcats. Peru State scored two runs on two hits and left one on in the third.
Park drew a two out walk in the top of the fourth inning but was unable to bring the base runner around for a quiet inning.
Carli Kohout (Cortland) hit a lead off single in the bottom of the fourth for the 'Cats. Then
Jerica German (Cortland) hit a single as the Bobcats had runners on first and second with no outs.
Then a ground out from
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) moved the runners into scoring position. Unfortunately, two strikeouts ended a promising inning for Peru State. The 'Cats had no runs on two hits and left two on.
Park went 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth inning as the score remained tied at two.
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) drew a one out walk but was then bounced in a fielder' choice.
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a two out single as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. The base runners would be left stranded as the 'Cats had no runs on one hit and two left in the fifth.
The Pirates led the top of the sixth with a leadoff single. Then a one out double broke the tie as the base runner came into score. The Pirates now led 3-2. A single and then an advance on the next at-bat had the Park runners in scoring position.
The 'Cats made a defensive play at the plate as they got the runner out at home for the second out of the inning. Park scored one run on three hits and left two on in the top of the sixth inning.
German hit a leadoff single for the 'Cats in the home half of the sixth inning.
Cassie Pearson (Aurora, Colo.) came into pinch run. A ground out moved the runner into scoring position. A strikeout and a fly out would end the inning for the 'Cats as they had no runs on one hit an error and left two on.
In the top of the seventh the Pirates hit a one out single, but the base runner would be out on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat. The base runner at first advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Pirates reached on an error as they threatened with runners on the corners.
Then a triple scored two runs for Park as they added some insurance now leading 5-2. Then an RBI single had the lead grow to four. The Pirates scored three runs on three hits an error and left one on.
The 'Cats went 1-2-3 in the final inning as the Pirates took game one 6-2.
Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched seven innings striking out one batter, giving up six runs on eight hits but only two were earned. Krieser would take the loss.
German led the way in hits in game one with two. Beckmann had the lone RBI in game one.
Game 2
Park started the second game going 1-2-3 in the top half of the first. Beckmann and Wilke hit back-to-back singles with one out in the first. Then with two outs German hit an RBI single as Beckmann came into score. The 'Cats scored one run on three hits and left two on.
The Pirates hit a leadoff single in second, but they were not able to do much else as they had no runs on one hit and left one on. Rothschild led off the home half of the second with a single. Then an error put Mathes aboard as the Bobcats had runners on first and second.
Rothschild scored the second run of the game on a wild pitch with two outs. A Beckmann single scored Mathes from third as the 'Cats led the Pirates 3-0. Wilke drew a walk and then Kohout hit a single to load the bases for Peru State. A strikeout would leave the bags juiced but the Bobcats scored two runs on three hits an error and left three on.
Park went three up three down in the third. Wessel hit a lead off single in the bottom of the third inning. She would later be bounced on a fielder's choice.
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) started a two out rally with a single. Then an Ohlde single brought Mathes into score as Peru State now led 4-0. The 'Cats scored one run on three hits and left two on.
Park drew a two out walk in the top of the fourth. Then a single would score the first run of the game for Park. The Pirates scored one run on one hit and left one on.
Wilke hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Later in the inning Wessel hit a two out double to have the 'Cats with runners in scoring position. Rothschild then hit a single as she brought in both runners as Peru State now led 6-1. The Bobcats scored two runs on three hits and left one on.
Park threatened with runners on the corners after a hit by pitch and a single in the top of fifth. Then a one out single scored two runs as the Pirates cut the lead in half. Park scored two runs on two hits and left no one on.
Dixon drew a leadoff walk in the home half of the sixth inning. Wilke was hit by a pitch with two down later in the fifth. Kohout walked to load the bases in the fifth. The 'Cats would leave the bases loaded as they had no runs on no hits in the fifth.
Park went three up three down in the sixth. Wessel hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth. Then with two down Dixon hit a single as the 'Cats had runners on the corners. An Ohlde single brought a run in. The Bobcats scored one run on three hits and left two on.
The Pirates led off the seventh with a single. Another single had Park threatening with runners on first and second. Park hit an RBI single with two outs in the seventh as they now trailed 7-4. A fly out would end the game as the Bobcats took the win.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched seven innings striking out six batters, giving up four runs on seven hits-all four were earned. Leach earned the win.
Wessel in game two led the way in hits as she had three. Ohlde and Rothschild tied for the lead in RBIs as they both had two.
Peru State will not have much time to rest as they are on the road Monday, April 11, at William Penn for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
