Box Score 2 (Peru, Neb.)—On Monday afternoon the Peru State softball team was swept by William Penn.The Statesmen completed the series sweep as they took two when they came to Peru in March. The Bobcats are now 10-21 overall and 5-15 in Heart conference play while the Statesmen are 15-15 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the doubleheader went…
Game 1
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) singled and advanced to second on an error in center but tried to stretch it to third where she would be thrown out.
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) doubled with two down and then advanced to third from a wild pitch.
Carli Kohout (Cortland) drew a walk as the 'Cats threatened with runners on the corners. The base runners would be left stranded as they had no runs on two hits an error and left two on base.
William Penn led off the first with a single from a bunt. Then a sac bunt got the runner to third. A drawn walk had the Statesmen with runners on the corners.
Then a single scored the first run of the game. A productive groundout made the score 2-0 Statesmen. A third single of the inning scored the third run for William Penn. The Statesmen had the bases loaded after a single and reaching on an error but there was no other damage done. William Penn scored three runs on four hits, an error and left three on.
Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) with one down in the top of the second doubled.
Mya Mathes (Ankeny, Iowa) drew a walk as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. The base runners were left stranded as they had no runs on one hit and left two on.
The Statesmen hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, but the runner was then bounced on a fielder's choice. William Penn had no runs on one hit and left one on in a quiet inning.
The 'Cats and the Statesmen both went three up three down in the third inning. Peru State went down in order in the top half of the fourth inning. A single and a walk in the home half of the fourth inning had William Penn threatening. Then a sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position.
A productive ground out scored the fourth run of the game for the Statesmen. William Penn then drew a walk, but a fielder's choice ended the inning. The Statesmen scored one run on one hit and left two on.
Mathes led off the fifth with a single but three straight outs had the Bobcats back out on the field in a hurry. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
William Penn led off the bottom of the fifth with a single. Then with one out the batter reached on an error as the Statesmen threatened with runners on first and second. An RBI single made the score 5-0 Statesmen. A walk then loaded the bases for William Penn.
Then a double scored two more runners as the Statesmen lead grew to seven. The Statesmen drew a walk with two down in the fifth. Then a single scored the eighth run of the game. That ended the game as the Statesmen defeated the Bobcats 8-0.
Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched 4.1 innings striking out one batter giving up seven runs on eight hits-six runs were earned. Kohout pitched .1 innings in relief as she gave up one run on two hits, but the run was unearned.
Mathes, Ohlde, Rothschild and Wilke tied for the lead in hits as they each had one.
Game 2
Ohlde led off the second game with a single but then was bounced on a fielder's choice. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on in the first.
The Statesmen hit a leadoff single from a bunt in the bottom of the first. Then a sac bunt put the runner in scoring position. A walk then had the Statesmen with runners on first and second. William Penn with one down after a fielder's choice scored the first run of the game from a single.
William Penn loaded the bases with a drawn walk. Then another walk scored the second run of the game for the Statesmen. A single from the next at-bat scored two more runs for William Penn as they led 4-0 early. The Statesmen scored four runs on three hits and left two on.
Jerica German (Cortland) blasted one over the left field fence to get the 'Cats on the board leading off the top half of the second. Then with two down Peru State loaded the bags from a Mathes single, an
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) walk and an Ohlde walk. A fly out unfortunately ended a promising two out rally. The 'Cats scored one run on two hits and left three on board.
William Penn with one down hit a single and then a double as the runners threatened on second and third. A sac fly to left field scored the fifth run of the game for the Statesmen. William Penn scored one run on two hits and left one on.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the third inning. The Statesmen managed to get a two out double in the home half of the third but were unable to bring the baserunner home.
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth inning. Then a pop up and a double play ended the fourth for the 'Cats. They had no runs on one hit and left no one on.
The Statesmen led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. The base runner later in the inning stole second. Then a second single of the inning had William Penn runners on the corners. A fielder's choice had a Statesmen base runner come home as they now led 6-1. A two out single had William Penn threatening with runners on first and second. The runners were left stranded as the Statesmen scored one run on three hits and left two on base.
The Bobcats and the Statesmen went down in order in the fifth inning. Kohout with one out in the sixth singled.
Maddie Howard (Council Bluffs, Iowa) came into pinch run for Kohout.
Camryn Craddock (Waverly) drew a walk as the 'Cats had runners on first and second. A double play would end the Bobcat threat. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
The Statesmen drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth. The runner would be bounced in a fielder's choice. William Penn had no runs on no hits and left one on.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the seventh as the Statesmen took the 6-1 win.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched six innings striking out one batter giving up six runs on nine hits-all six runs were earned.
German, Kohout, Mathes, Ohlde and Wessel all tied for hits with one. German had the lone RBI.
The road trip for Peru State continues this weekend as they face Baker in Baldwin City, Kansas on Friday, April 15, and will face Benedictine in Atchison, Kansas on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. each day.
