Peru State Loses Double Header to Tabor

(Peru, Neb)—On Tuesday February, 15 the Peru State baseball team lost a double header to Tabor College. The Bobcats lost the first game 15-8 and the second game 11-5. The Bobcats fall to 0-8 on the season and Tabor improves to 7-3 overall.
 
The Following is a recap of the doubleheader down in Hillsboro, Kansas:
 
Game 1
It was a hitter's paradise in game one starting right away in the first inning as the Bobcats got on the board first with a two-run blast from Jesus Tavares (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) giving the Bobcats the early 2-0 lead. The lead was short-lived as the Bluejays started the game hot as they scored five runs on five hits and two errors, they left one man on base in the first.

In the second inning the Bobcats got one back as Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Illinois) homered. Unfortunately, the Bluejays bats would stay hot as they had back-to-back homeruns and finished the inning with five runs on five hits and led 10-3 going into the third inning.

In the fourth inning the Bobcats got two back after back-to-back homeruns from Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, Dominican Republic) and Wright. That would be the 'Cats only two runs of the half inning cutting the lead down to five.

The Bluejay bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning as they added two more home runs and scored three runs off the two home runs to extend the lead 13-5. The Bluejays hit another homerun in the bottom of the sixth scoring two runs from the blast.

The Bobcats did their best to rally in the final inning as Johannes Booyens (Johannesburg, South Africa) hit a two-run home run to make the score 15-7. Later in the inning Francisco hit a double that sent Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, California) home. That is the last run the Bobcats would score effectively ending the rally.

The Bobcats lost to the Bluejays 15-8 as the Bluejays scored 15 runs on 15 hits with just one error. The Bobcats had eight runs on nine hits and two errors in the game. The Bobcats fell to 0-7 on the year and the Bluejays improved to 6-3 overall.

The Bobcats used three pitchers on the day as Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) pitched 1.1 innings, striking out three batters giving up ten runs on nine hits, nine of which were earned. Diana would take the loss. Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) pitched 3.1 innings striking out three batters, giving up two runs on four hits, but only two were earned. Rounding out the pitching in game one was Elijah Boersen (Cairo) as he pitched 1.1 innings, striking out three batters giving up three runs on two hits all three runs were earned.

Three players were tied for the lead in hits Bradford, Francisco and Wright all had two apiece. Four players were tied for the lead in RBIs as Booyens, Francisco, Tavares and Wright all were tied with two apiece.

Game 2
In the first inning, Tabor homered to take an early 2-0 lead, the second inning is when the Bluejays broke open the game as they hit a three-run home run. The Bluejays ended up scoring four runs on three hits and an error as they took a quick 6-0 lead.

The Bluejay bats were hot all day as they poured it on in the third inning this time scoring four runs off two hits, they led 10-0 going into the fourth inning. In the fourth the Bobcats finally got a run as Tavares scored on a ground out from Angel Andrades (Humacao, Puerto Rico). The Bobcats got another run in the fourth as Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Florida) scored on a wild pitch.

The Bobcats in the sixth inning rallied as Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, Puerto Rico) scored from a sac fly by Andrades. The next at-bat Adams scored on an error from the Bluejay shortstop. Later, in the inning Blake Denson (Broken Bow) scored on a single from Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, California).

The Bobcats cut the lead to five as they trailed 10-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bluejays plated one more run off a home run in the bottom of the inning. Tabor ultimately ended up winning the game 11-5.
Tabor scored 11 runs on eight hits and had three errors, Peru State finished the day with five runs on seven hits and two errors on the day.

The Bobcats used three pitchers as Joseph Vargas (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico) pitched 2.2 innings, striking out six batters, giving up ten runs on five hits, nine of which were earned, and he would take the loss. John Laureano (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) pitched 2.1 innings, striking out two batters only giving up two hits on the day. Hunter Abney (Union Star, Missouri) pitched one inning giving up one run on one hit.

There were three Bobcats tied for the lead in hits as Adams, Pavletich and Tavares had two each. Leading the way in RBIs was Andrades as he had two on the day.

Here is what assistant coach Gianfranco Garlobo had to say about taking the early season lumps.

"Tough losses early in the year against teams from the SAC (Sooner Athletic Conference) and KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference)," said Garlobo. "We are still figuring out stuff during nonconference but hopefully we can figure it out these next nine games before we open up conference play against MidAmerica Nazarene on the road."

The Peru State baseball team heads south this weekend to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan University for a three-game series in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
