(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State women's basketball team picked up its first conference win over Baker 72-67 Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats are now 5-6 overall and 1-4 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Wildcats fall to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how the game went…
Baker got out to an early 5-1 lead, but Peru State then went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Contributing to the run were baskets by Sam Stewart
(Mount Ayr, Iowa) and
Jescenia Mosley (Shenandoah, Iowa).
The Wildcats would tie the game at seven all but then the Bobcats went on a 14-2 run to take a 23-9 lead capped off by a jumper from
Hailey Ingram (Omaha). Peru State would take a 25-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
Peru State only scored one bucket for the first five minutes of the second quarter as Baker had gotten the lead trimmed to nine trailing 27-18. Mosley hit a big layup to get the lead back to double digits for Peru State.
Baker then went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to six 29-23, The Bobcats would keep their distance from the Wildcats, as Mosley, late in the second quarter hit a big three to go up by nine 34-25.
The Wildcats finished the half on a 7-2 run as they cut the lead to three 36-33 with a halftime buzzer beater. The teams would trade buckets to open the third quarter but Baker would tie the game at 40 all with a little under six minutes to play in third.
Baker then took a three-point lead after a few free throws. The Bobcats and Wildcats would then trade buckets but Peru State could not close the gap as they would trail by three or one for much of the third quarter.
The Bobcats finally broke through and took a 48-47 lead from a layup by Mosley with under three minutes to play in the quarter. Baker would lead 50-49 heading into the final quarter of play.
The Wildcats extended their lead to three right away in the fourth quarter but then Ingram hit a huge three to tie the game at 52 all. The Wildcats and the Bobcats would then be in a back-and-forth affair as the Wildcats would extend their lead to three but the Bobcats kept cutting down to one.
Baker then got out to a five-point 60-55 lead with five minutes left in the game. Peru State got the score back within two after Stewart hit a layup but then Baker countered with a three to take a 63-58 lead with around 4:30 to play.
Peru State then went on a huge 9-0 run to take 67-63 lead highlighted by an enormous three from
Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa).
The Wildcats got within two once more but then Ingram hit a huge three with about thirty seconds left to play to take a five-point lead. Peru State won the game 72-67.
Peru State shot 29-of-66 from the field shooting 39.4%, 4-of-16 shooting 25% from beyond the arc and 16-of-24 from the line shooting 66.7%.
Baker shot 19-of-48 field shooting 39.6%, 4-of-15 shooting 26.7% from deep and 25-of-33 from the charity stripe shooting 75.8%.
Peru State had 38 points in the paint comparatively to Baker's 26. Peru State had a slight edge in points off turnovers 31-28 and Baker led 25-21 in bench points.
Stewart led the team with 22 points, Mosley finished 19 and Ingram had 11 off the bench. Stewart and Mosley tied for the lead in rebounds with seven each and Mosley had a team high three assists.
Peru State hits the road to face Grand View in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, December 14. Tip-Off is set for 5:30 p.m.
