Peru State Baseball Splits DH at Grand View

(Peru, Neb.) – After dropping the first game on Friday, the Peru State baseball team came back with a convincing win in the second game to split the double header at Grand View in Des Moines.
 
The Vikings took the first game 7-2 before the 'Cats pounded out a 16-7 win in the second contest.
 
Grand View's record after Friday was 6-17 overall and 2-12 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division. Peru State is 11-17-1 on the season and 7-5 in the Heart North.
 
Game One Action
 
Grand View struck first in the bottom of the first by scoring five runs which came off of two home runs.

Peru State got on the board in the top of the second inning. Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) doubled to left-center and went to third when Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) singled to right. On a sac fly by Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.), Solis scored and Tavarez went to second. That would be all the 'Cats could push across in the inning as they trailed 5-1 at that point.
 
The Vikings added two in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 7-1.
 
In the top of the sixth, Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) singled to right to start the inning. Landaeta would move to second when Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) singled to left. Victor Figueroa (Caguas, P.R.) entered to run for Cendejas. On a ground out, Landaeta advanced to third with Figueroa being forced out. Solis reached on a walk with Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, P.R.) entering to run for Solis. Tavarez doubled to short to drive in Landaeta with Santiago stopping at third. The Bobcats would eventually leave two stranded and trailed 7-2 which was the final scoring of the game.
 
Grand View scored their seven runs on nine hits and committed one error. Peru State scored their two runs on seven hits and had three miscues.
 
Landaeta and Tavarez each had two hits to lead the Bobcats. Tavarez and Wright each were credited with one RBI.
 
Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P.R.) started on the mound for Peru State and was tagged for the loss. Diana allowed nine hits, seven earned runs, and struck out five. Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) threw two innings. Rodriguez did not allow any hits or runs and struck out four.

Game Two Action
 
Peru State scored four runs in the top of the first to start the game. Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) doubled to deep right center and would go to third on a ground out. Cendejas would hit a sacrifice fly with Torres scoring. Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) singled to third and would score when Solis doubled to deep right. Tavarez singled to third with Solis stopping at third. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) reach on a walk with Tavarez moving to second to load the bases. Wright doubled to deep left-center to drive in Solis and Tavarez to make it 4-0.
 
Grand View would plate three runs in the bottom of the frame to put the score at 4-3 after one complete inning.
 
The 'Cats would extend their lead in the top of the second. After an out, Torres reached on a walk and would go to second on a wild pitch. Landaeta reached on an error with Torres scoring. On the play, Landaeta would advance to third. Cendejas singled to drive in Landaeta to put the score at 6-3 as the Bobcats would strand two.
 
The Vikings would get those two runs back in the bottom of the second to make it 6-5.
 
Later, Grand View would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth with one run.
 
Peru State would eventually take the lead for good in the top of the fifth. After an out, Torres doubled to left-center. Landaeta would follow with a two-run home over the left field fence on a 1-2 count. After the second out, Caballero singled down the left field line. Solis followed with a two-run home run on a 1-1 count to put the score at 10-6.
 
The Bobcats would add more insurance runs in the top of the sixth after holding the Vikings scoreless in the bottom of the fifth.
 
After an out, Wright reached on a walk. Wright would eventually score on a Grand View error. Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) entered as a pinch hitting and would reach on a walk. Torres singled to left and Francisco stopped at second. After a pitching change, Landaeta hit his second home run of the game on a 0-2 count to make it 13-6. Cendejas then doubled to deep right-center and would go to third on a ground out. Edwin Quinones (Loiza, P.R.) entered to run for Cendejas and would score on a wild pitch. Solis singled to right-center with Santiago coming in to run for Solis. Tavarez walked as did Tingwald. Wright also reached on a walk to drive in Santiago for the sixth run of the inning.

Grand View would score their final run in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Peru State scored its 16 runs on 18 hits and committed one error. The Vikings scored their seven runs on nine hits and had three miscues.
 
Solis went five for five to lead the Bobcats. Torres and Caballero each had three hits while Landaeta and Cendejas each had two. Landaeta drove in six runs while Solis and Wright each were credited with three RBI. Cendjas added two RBI.
 
Steven Ortiz (Yonkers, N.Y.) started the game for Peru State and was credited for the win. Ortiz allowed six hits, six earned runs, and struck out five. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) threw the final three innings. Laureano gave up just three hits, one earned run, and struck out one.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats and Vikings are playing another double header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
 
Peru State will be hosting Briar Cliff on Wednesday with the double header in non-conference action scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Chargers are 22-7 on the season. The two teams split a double header last week.
 
The 'Cats will then host Heart North foe Clarke (Iowa) on Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11, in a pair of double headers scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. each day. The Pride are 22-8 overall and are 12-2 in the Heart North.
