Slug Fest at Centennial Complex

(Peru, Neb.) – On April 26, in non-conference games, the Peru State and Briar Cliff (Iowa) baseball teams split their two high scoring games. Peru State won the first game 18-16. Briar Cliff won the second game 33-21. In the double header there was 22 total homes runs in the game.
 
Peru State is now 24-26-1 overall on the year and Briar Cliff is now 31-15 overall on the year.
 
In the second game Peru State set two school baseball records. The Bobcats had the most hits with 25 and tied for home runs in a game at nine. It cannot be determined whether the previous records came in nine-inning games or in seven which was the case on Monday.
 
In addition, it appears the 'Cats tied an NAIA record with four consecutive home runs in the bottom of the second.
 
Game One
 
Briar Cliff was unable to find any runs in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled thru a hole at shortstop. After an out Torres reached second with a stolen base. On a ground out, Torres advanced to third. Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) singled to right as Torres scored. On a 1-0 count Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) hit a two-run home run to right. The next batter, Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela), singled to left. Entering the game to pinch run was Tyler Levy (Nebraska City). Levy advanced to second on a stolen base. Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) singled to center as Levy went home. Peru State was up 4-0 to end the first full inning of the game.
 
The Chargers would not score any runs in the top of the inning to go scoreless for the second straight inning.
 
The Bobcats would add more runs in the bottom of the second frame. Torres reached base on a Charger error. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) reached first on a fielder's choice. Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) reached first on a fielder's choice as Torres scored and Landaeta advanced to second. After an out, Tingwald singled to left as Landaeta and Cendejas would score off a misplayed grounded on a Charger as Tingwald advanced to third. Chacin singled thru the hole at second base as Tingwald scored. Wright reached base on another error as Chacin advanced to second. Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, P.R.) singled to center as Chacin advanced to third and then scored on the throw. Wright advanced to third on the throw. After an out, Torres reached base on a bobble by Briar Cliff as Wright scored. The 'Cats would extend their lead to 10-0 to end the second inning of the contest.
 
The Chargers would finally get on the board with a big third inning as they would get eight runs.
 
In the bottom of the third Cendejas reached on a walk. Solis hit a two-run home run to right on a 0-1 count to make it 12-8. Chacin followed by singling to right. After a Bobcat was picked off, Chacin advanced to second on a stolen base. Levy entered to pinch run for Chacin. After an out Francisco double to center as Levy scored. The Bobcats led 13-8 through three full innings.
 
In the top of the fourth the Chargers plated three to cut the 'Cats lead to 13-11.
 
The 'Cats would be unable to get any runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
In the fifth inning no one would score any runs with just one hit combined.
 
In the top of the sixth the Chargers would get four runs to take the lead 15-13. Then, in the top of the seventh, the Chargers would get one more to extend their lead to 16-13 going into the bottom of the seventh.
 
Cendejas reached on a walk to start the bottom of the inning. Entering to pinch run for Cendejas was Levy. Solis singled to right as Levy advanced to third. Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, P.R.) entered to pinch run for Solis. Tingwald reached on a walk as the base runners advanced. Edwin Quinones (Loiza, P.R.) came in to pinch run for Tingwald. Chacin hit a sacrifice fly to left as Levy scored to put the score at 16-14. After an out, Francisco reached on a walk to load the bases. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a walk-off grand slam to left on a 1-2 count. That would give the Bobcats an 18-16 win in game one.
 
Peru State scored their 18 runs on 15 hits while having four errors. Briar Cliff scored their 16 runs on 16 hits while also having four miscues.
 
Francisco, Solis, and Chacin each had three hits to lead the 'Cats. Adams led the team with four RBI while Solis had three. Tingwald and Chacin each contributed two RBI to the win.
 
Joseph Vargas (Juana Diaz, P.R.) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed 9 hits and 8 earned runs. Vargas had 2 strikeouts. Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 2 hits and 3 earned runs. Pacheco had 2 strikeouts. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) pitched 3 innings and allowed 5 hits and 5 earned runs. Laureano had 4 strikeouts and was credited with the win.

Game Two
 
Unlike the first game the batting for the Chargers would be on point to start the game as they plated six in the top of the first inning.
 
The 'Cats would a score one run in the bottom of the first to cut the score to 6-1 off a Torres single shot to center on a 1-0 count.
 
In the top of the second, the Chargers would score four more runs to take a big lead at 10-1.

In the bottom of the second, Francisco started off with a triple to deep left-center. After two straight outs, Adams singled to short as Francisco scored. Gustavo Rivera (Bayamon, P.R.) doubled deep down the left field line as Adams advanced to third. Torres stepped to the plate and hit a three-run inside-the-park home run to right on a 2-0 count. Wright would homer to left on a 2-0 count which was followed by Cendejas homering to left on a full count. Tingwald would hit a home run to center on a 0-0 count for four consecutive home runs – tying the NAIA record. Peru State would get seven runs in the innings to get back in the game but still trailed 10-8 going into the top of the third inning.
 
Briar Cliff scored six more runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 16-8.
 
To start the bottom of the third, Adams reached base on a walk. Casey Steffens (Omaha) singled to right as Adams advanced to third and Steffens advanced to second on the throw. On a Bobcat ground out, Adams would score. Peru State now trailed 16-9 after three complete innings.
 
The Chargers would then score six in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go up 28-9 at that point.
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Levy pinch hit for Torres and singled to center. Wright hit a two-run homer to left on a 1-0 count. After two outs Francisco homered to right on a 2-1 count. The 'Cats would get three runs but they would still trail 28-12.
 
In the top of the sixth the Chargers would go scoreless – their only scoreless inning of the game.
 
After an out in the bottom of the sixth, Adams reached base on a walk. Steffens singled thru the hole at shortstop as Adams advanced to second. Entering to pinch run for Steffens was Quinones. Levy doubled to right as Adams scored and Quinones advanced to third. Wright singled to center as Quinones scored and Levy advanced to third. Cendajas singled to center as Levy scored and Wright advanced to third. After a 'Cats out, Francisco hit a three-run home run to right on a 1-1 count. The Bobcats plated six to cut the deficit 28-18 going into the last inning.
 
The Chargers plated five more in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 33-18.
 
After an out in the bottom of the seventh for Peru State, Steffens singled to left. Levy singled thru the hole at second base and Steffens advanced to second. A wild pitch by Briar Cliff allowed the base runners to advance. Quinones entered to pinch run for Steffens. Wright hit a three-run home run to left on a 1-1 count. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the next two batters went down as Briar Cliff won 33-21.
 
Briar Cliff scored their 33 runs on 19 hits while committing zero errors. Peru State scored their 21 runs on 25 hits, a new Peru State single-game record, while committing seven errors.
 
Wright led the team with five hits-three of which were home runs. Francisco had four hits and Steffens and Levy each had three. Torres and Alex Ortiz (Kissimmee, Fla.) each added two hits. Wright led the team with eight RBI. Francisco and Torres each had four RBI with Cendejas finishing with two.
 
Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed 11 hits and 16 runs – 15 of which were earned. Rodriguez struck out 3 Chargers and was credited with the loss. Garrett Bassinger (Nebraska City) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 2 hits and 7 runs – which 5 were earned. Bassinger struck out 2 batters. Solis pitched 0.2 innings and allowed 2 hits and 5 runs which 3 were earned. Adams pitched 1.1 innings and did not give up any hits or runs. Cendejas pitched 1.0 inning and allowed 4 hits and 5 runs – 4 of which were earned. Cendejas struck out 1 Briar Cliff batter.

Peru State will be at home for a three-game series against Mount Mercy (Iowa) (29-15, 17-11). The first game will be a single nine on Friday at 2 p.m. and a double header on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. Game three will be played if the first two games are split. The winner of this series will go on to the conference tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.
