Mount Mercy Softball Sweeps Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – In a pair of key Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division games, the Mount Mercy Mustangs swept the visiting Peru State Bobcats 12-0 and 6-5 on Sunday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
 
With the wins, Mount Mercy improved to 27-9 overall and 20-8 in the Heart North. The 'Cats fell to 16-27 on the year and 10-18 in conference play.
 
 Game One Action
 
Peru State was unable to muster any offense in the first game against the Mustangs.
 
Mount Mercy scored two in the bottom of the first and added one in the bottom of the second before exploding for six in the bottom of the third to go up 9-0. The Mustangs added three more in the bottom of the fourth which was enough for the mercy rule.
 
The Mustangs scored their 12 runs on 14 hits and committed one error. Peru State managed just two hits and also had two errors.
 
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Alaina Lacy (Lincoln) each had one hit for the Bobcats.
 
Alana Krieser (Lincoln) threw the first three innings and was tagged for the loss. Krieser gave up nine hits and nine runs – three earned. Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) tossed the final inning. Leach allowed five hits, three earned runs, and struck out one.

The Bobcats were able to get on the board first in the top of the second. Tyler Farrell (Brandon, Fla.) singled to center. After two outs, Bailey Deal (Tinmath, Colo.) singled thru the hole at shortstop with Farrell stopping at second. Brooklyn Franco (Syracuse, Utah) reached on a walk to load the bases. Takia Walker (Enterprise, Ala.) tripled down the right field line to clear the bases. Alyiah Franco (Syracuse, Utah) singled thru the hole at shortstop to score Walker to make it 4-0.

Mount Mercy plated three in the bottom of the third to cut it to 4-3.
 
Peru State was able to get one back in the top of the fourth. Deal singled thru the hole at short and went to second on a ground out. On a second ground out, Deal went to third. A. Franco singled thru the hole at shortstop to drive in Deal to make it 5-3.
 
The Mustangs were able to regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they plated three runs to eventually win 6-5.
 
Mount Mercy scored their six runs on eight hits and committed one error. Peru State scored their five runs on nine hits and also had one miscue.
 
Deal led the team as she went three for three. A. Franco and Farrell each had two hits. Walker led the team with three RBI while A. Franco had two.
 
Layla Worthington (Holladay, Utah) tossed a complete game and was tagged for the loss. Worthington gave up eight hits, six earned runs, and struck out one.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats control their own destiny in terms of securing a spot in the upcoming Heart post-season tournament. Peru State has six games left this week with the first four being on the road.
 
The 'Cats will travel to Lamoni, Iowa, on Tuesday to face Graceland at 4 p.m. The Yellowjackets are presently 15-32 overall and are 7-23 in the Heart North.
 
On Thursday, Peru State will be in Parkville, Mo., to face Park at 2 p.m. The Pirates are 6-28 overall and 6-24 in the Heart South.
 
The final regular season games will be on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 1 p.m. Culver-Stockton (Mo.) will be the opponent and is one of the teams the Bobcats are chasing in the Heart North. The Wildcats are 18-26 on the season and 15-17 in the Heart North.
