Peru State Baseball Splits with the Mustangs

(Peru, Neb.) – On April 21, the Peru State baseball team played non-conference opponent Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and came out with a split. Game one went to the 'Cats 9-4 and game two went to the Mustangs 8-1.
 
Peru State is now 20-22-1 overall on the season and Morningside is 20-25 overall on the year.
 
Game One
 
In the top of the first after an out, Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) singled to third. Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) reached first base on a walk. After a wild pitch, the base runners advanced a base each. Manual Caballero (Dolega, Panama) reached base on a walk. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) reached first on the fielder's choice as Landaeta would come in to score on the play.  The 'Cats scored one run to take the early lead in the game.
 
In the top of the second, Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, P.R.) reached on a walk. After an out Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) reached on a walk. Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) singled to center as Wright advanced to third on the batted ball. Tyler Levy (Nebraska City) came in to pinch run for Chacin. Levy would advance to second on a stole base. Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) grounded out, but was able to bring in Wright to score while Levy advanced to third. Landaeta singled to third as Levy would score. The Bobcats got two more runs to extend their lead over the Mustangs 3-0.
 
In the bottom of the second Morningside scored four runs in the inning to take the lead 4-3 going into the top of the third.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Chacin reached base on an error by the Mustangs. Levy would enter to pinch run for Chacin. A sacrifice bunt moved Levy to second. On an error by Morningside, Levy advanced to third. Levy would score on a wild throw from the Mustangs.  Peru State would tie the game at 4-4 going into the bottom of the inning.
 
In the top of the sixth Torres tripled to right field to start the inning off in the right direction for the 'Cats. Landaeta doubled to left to bring in Torres to score. The Bobcats would take the lead 5-4 heading to the bottom of the inning.
 
Peru State would blow the game open in the top of the seventh. Tavarez singled to center with Levy entering to run for Tavarez. Francisco would get hit by a pitch to reach first. Wright would single to third as the bases would be loaded. Chacin reached base on a fielder's choice as Levy would score. Wright would advance to second and Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, P.R.) pinch ran for Chacin. Torres reached on an intentional walk. Landaeta singled to left as Wright scored and base runners advanced. After an out Caballero singled to center as Santiago and Torres scored. The 'Cats would get four runs in the inning and ultimately win the game 9-4.
 
Peru State scored their nine runs on 12 hits while committing one error. Morningside scored their four runs on seven hits while committing five errors.
 
Landaeta led the team with four hits. Caballero and Wright each had two hits. Landaeta led the team with three RBIs while Caballero had two RBIs.
 
Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched 5 innings and allowed 5 hits and 4 earned runs. Pacheco struck out one Mustang batter while earning the win. Reiner Mendez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) pitched 1 inning and allowed one hit. Mendez struck out 4 Morningside batters. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 hit.

Game Two
 
Tingwald singled to left to start the top of the second after a scoreless first inning. After a wild pitch, Tingwald advanced to second. After back-to-back outs, Wright reached on a walk. Wright advanced to second on a stolen base. Tingwald scored on an error on the Mustangs. Peru State would take the lead 1-0. This would be the only run the Bobcats would score all game.
 
The Mustangs would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. They would add one in the bottom of the fifth and plated four more in the bottom of the sixth for the final 8-1 score.
 
Morningside scored their eight runs on three hits while committing one error. Peru State would score their one run on five hits and committed one error.
 
Joseph Vargas (Juan Diaz, P.R.) pitched 4 innings and allowed 0 hits and 3 earned runs. Vargas would strike out 2 Mustang players and was tagged for the loss. Victor Figueroa (Caguas, P.R.) pitched 2 innings and allowed 3 hits and 5 runs – 1 earned. Figueroa struck out 2 batters.
