Bobcat Baseball Gains Sunday Sweep

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State baseball team did what they needed to do on Sunday and that was to sweep the visiting Missouri Valley Vikings.
 
The Bobcats would take the first game of the double header 12-3 and then closed out the series with a 7-6 win.
 
Peru State is now 19-21-1 on the year and more importantly are now 15-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division. After the weekend action, the 'Cats are now sitting in second in the Heart North – just two games behind first place Clarke (Iowa).
 
Missouri Valley fell to 14-28 overall and 7-17 in the Heart South.
 
Game One Action
 
Peru State would get on the board first in the bottom of the first. Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled to left to start the inning. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) followed with a single with Torres stopping at second. Both base runners would advance on a throwing error. On a wild pitch, Torres scored with Landaeta moving to third. On a ground out, Landaeta scored. Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) singled to short and went to second when Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) singled to right. After a second out, Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) doubled to center to put the score at 4-0.

Missouri Valley would get two in the top of the second while leaving the bases loaded.
 
The 'Cats would get one run back in the bottom of the second. After an out, Torres singled to right. Torres would then steal second and would go to third on a ground out. On a wild pitch, Torres would score to make it 5-2 after two complete innings.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Bobcats would add two more runs. Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) reached on a walk. Tingwald singled to the infield with Tavarez stopping at second. After an out, both base runners advanced on a wild pitch. After the second out, Torres tripled deep down the right field line to drive in the base runners and was eventually thrown out trying to complete an inside-the-park home run. After three innings, it was 7-2 Peru State.
 
Peru State would increase its lead in the bottom of the fourth. After an out, Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) was hit by a pitch. Tyler Levy (Nebraska City) entered to run for Cendejas and would steal second. Levy would move to third on a ground out. Solis would single to center to drive in Levy. On a wild pitch, Solis would move to second. Tavarez stepped to the plate and on a 2-1 count, hit a home run to right to make it 10-2. Tingwald walked as did Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.). On a wild pitch, both base runners advanced. On another wild pitch, Tingwald score the fourth and final run of the inning. After four complete, the Bobcats led 11-2.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Torres led off with a double. Torres would move to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Cendejas singled to center to drive in Torres to make it 12-2 Peru State after five innings.
 
Mo Valley would plate one run in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-3. That would be the final run scored in the first game.
 
The Bobcats scored their 12 runs on 14 hits and committed one error. The Vikings scored their three runs on three hits and committed two errors.
 
Torres went four for four at the plate to lead the 'Cats. Caballero added three hits while Solis and Tingwald each finished with two. Torres, Cendejas, and Tavarez each drove in two runs while Solis and Tingwald each added one RBI.

Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) started on the mound for Peru State and earned the win. Rodriguez threw six innings and allowed three hits, three earned runs, and struck out nine. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) threw one inning. Laureano did not allow any hits and struck out two.

Game Two Action
 
After a scoreless inning and one-half, Peru State was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning. After an out, Solis doubled deep down the left field line. After the second out, Wright reached on a walk as did Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) to load the bases. On a wild pitch, Solis scored the first run of the game with the other base runners advancing. Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) stepped up to the plate and hit a home run to left on a 1-0 count to put the score at 4-0.
 
Missouri Valley would cut the deficit in half in the top of the third by scoring two runs.
 
In the bottom of the third, Solis would homer to extend the lead to 5-2.
 
Then, in the bottom of the fourth, after an out, Chacin singled to third. Levy entered to run for Chacin and eventually went to second with a stolen base. After another out, Levy stole third. He would later score to make it 6-2.
 
The Bobcats would add another run in the bottom of the fifth. After two outs, Wright tripled deep down the left field line and would later score on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.
 
The Vikings would try to make it interesting by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth to cut Peru State's lead to one. That would be the end of the scoring for the game.
 
Peru State would score its seven runs on eight hits and did not commit any errors. Missouri Valley scored their six runs on five hits and had two miscues.
 
Solis and Chacin each had two hits to lead the 'Cats in the second game win. Chacin drove in three RBI while Solis added one.
 
Caballero tossed the first four innings and earned the win. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, and struck out five. Daniel Castillo (Barranquilla, Colombia) threw one inning. Castillo did not allow any hits and struck out one. Joseph Vargas (Juana Diaz, P.R.) entered and did not record an out. Vargas allowed three earned runs. Joshua Santiago (Carolina, P.R.) came in to throw the final two innings and earned the save. Santiago gave up one hit, one earned run, and struck out three.

Upcoming Games
 
Mother Nature permitting, Peru State will host Graceland (Iowa) on Tuesday in a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The Yellowjackets are 12-24 on the year and are 5-17 in the Heart North.
 
Then, on Wednesday, the Bobcats will play a non-conference double header in Sioux City, Iowa, against Morningside beginning at 2 p.m. The Mustangs are 19-24 on the year.
