Peru State and Mo Valley Split Baseball DH

(Peru, Neb.) – After a sluggish start to its first game which resulted in a loss, the Bobcat baseball team bounced back with a come-from-behind win in the second game against the visiting Missouri Valley Vikings.
 
Mo Valley took the first game 6-2. After trailing 7-3 in the second game, Peru State scored seven runs in its last three innings to capture a 10-7 win.
 
Peru State is now 17-21-1 on the season and are 13-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division. The Vikings are 14-26 overall and are 7-15 in the Heart South.

Neither team scored the first three innings although the Vikings had base runners in each of the three.

Bobcats to the split on Saturday

 
In the top of the fourth, Missouri Valley plated three runs to take a 3-0 lead. They would add two in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0.
 
It would be in the bottom of the fifth that the 'Cats would get on the board. After an out, Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) singled thru the hole at second base. Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, P.R.) entered to run for Solis. On the first pitch he saw, Jesus Tavarez (Santa Domingo, D.R.) hit a home run over the right field fence to cut the deficit to 5-2.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats would leave the bases loaded without scoring.
 
The Vikings would add one run in the top of the seventh to make the final score 6-2.
 
Missouri Valley scored their six runs on nine hits and did not commit any errors. Peru State scored their two runs on four hits and committed three errors.
 
Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.), Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama), Solis, and Tavarez each had one hit for Peru State. Tavarez collected both RBI in the loss.
 
Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P.R.) started on the mound for the 'Cats and suffered the loss. Diana threw six innings and gave up seven hits, five earned runs, and struck out three. Joshua Santiago (Carolina, P.R.) tossed the final inning. Santiago allowed two hits and one earned run.

Game Two Action
 
Peru State was able to strike first in the second game. Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled to third to start the inning. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) singled to the infield with Torres stopping at second. On a wild pitch, both base runners advanced. Cendejas then singled thru the hole at short stop to drive in both runners to put the 'Cats on top 2-0.
 
The Bobcats would add another run in the bottom of the second. Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) singled down the left field line. After an out, Wright stole second and later went to third on an error by the Vikings. Wright would eventually score when Landaeta singled to shallow right to make it 3-0.
 
Missouri Valley would tie the score with three runs in the top of the third. Then, after shutting down the 'Cats in the bottom of the inning, the Vikings scored four in the top of the fourth to take the lead at 7-3.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the 'Cats would cut the deficit in half. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) got on with a single to shallow left. After two outs, Torres reached with a walk and Tingwald moved to second. Landaeta then doubled down the left field line to drive in both base runners to make it 7-5.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Peru State again cut the deficit in half. Caballero doubled to deep right-center to start the inning. On a ground out, he moved to third. Tavarez would single to right to bring home Caballero to put the score at 7-6.
 
The Bobcats would get the runs it needed for the win in the bottom of the sixth. Torres reached on a walk and would go to second on a wild pitch. Landaeta would reach on an error with Torres moving to third. Landaeta would then steal second. Cendejas was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a pitching change, Caballero reached on a fielder's choice as Torres was forced out at home. Solis, on a 0-2 count, would hit a grand slam over the right field fence to put Peru State on top 10-7.
 
Peru State would get out of a little jam in the top of the seventh top preserve the win.
 
The 'Cats would score their ten runs on 12 hits and did not commit any errors. Mo Valley scored their seven runs on ten hits and had two miscues.
 
Landaeta led the team as he went three for four while Solis and Wright each had two hits. Solis had a team-high four RBI while Landaeta was credited with three. Cendejas added two and Tavarez had the last RBI.
 
Steven Ortiz (Yonkers, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Bobcats. Ortiz threw 5.1 innings and allowed 9 hits, 7 earned runs, and struck out 7. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) entered to relieve Ortiz and picked up the win. Adams tossed 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit.

Upcoming Games
 
The same two teams will face off Sunday in Peru with a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
 
Peru State will host Graceland (Iowa) on Tuesday, weather permitting, in a double header starting at 1 p.m. The Yellowjackets split with Culver-Stockton in Lamoni, Iowa, on Saturday. Graceland is now 11-23 overall and 4-16 on the season.
 
On Wednesday, the 'Cats will travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to face Morningside in a non-conference double header beginning at 2 p.m. The Mustangs are presently 17-24 on the season.
