Doane Baseball Sweeps Bobcats at Werner Park

(Peru, Neb.) – While it was an experience to play in a minor league ball park, the final outcome of the double header was not what the Peru State Bobcat baseball team wanted.
 
The 'Cats played the Doane Tigers at Werner Park in Papillion on Tuesday and were swept by the Tigers 7-0 and 6-5.
 
With the wins, Doane improved to 24-12-1 while Peru State fell to 16-20-1.
 
Game One Action
 
Peru State was unable to get their bats going in the first game.
 
Doane scored three in the bottom of the first and added two in each of the fourth and fifth innings for their seven runs.
 
The Tigers scored their seven runs on 11 hits and did not commit any errors. Peru State mustered just three hits and had one miscue.
 
Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.), Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama), and Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) each had one hit in the loss.
 
Daniel Castillo (Barranquilla, Columbia) started the game for Peru State on the bump and was tagged for the loss. Castillo threw four innings and allowed nine hits, five earned runs, and struck out five. Joseph Vargas (Juana Diaz, P.R.) threw one inning. Vargas gave up two hits, two earned runs, and struck out two. Reiner Mendez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) tossed the final inning. Mendez did not allow any hits and struck out two.

Game Two Action
 
The Bobcats struck first in the second game. Peru State was able to get on board in the bottom of the first inning. Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled to second base and later would go to second on a wild pitch. Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) walked. Then, the base runners executed a double steal. Cendejas walked to load the bases. Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) was hit by a pitch to drive in Torres which ended up being the only run scored.
 
In the bottom of the second, the 'Cats plated three runs. Tingwald singled to short and would go to third when Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) reached first on an error by Doane. Gustavo Rivera (Bayamon, P.R.) would reach on a fielder's choice with Tingwald and Adams both scoring on a throwing error. Tyler Levy (Nebraska City) would enter to run for Rivera. Levy would eventually move to third on a wild pitch. Torres doubled down the left field line to make the score 4-0 at that point.
 
Doane would get on the score board in the top of the fifth as they scored one run to make it 4-1. The Tigers would then explode for five runs in the top of the sixth which included a grand slam to take the lead at 6-4.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, after an out, Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) singled through the left side. After the second out, Torres doubled to right field to drive in Adams who returned after being pinch hit for to make what would be the final score of 6-5.
 
Doane scored their six runs on nine hits and committed three errors. Peru State scored their five runs on six hits and did not have any errors.
 
Torres led the team by going three for four at the plate and had two RBI. Caballero and Rivera were each credited with one RBI.
 
Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) threw the first 5.1 innings for Peru State. He allowed 7 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 4. Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) tossed the final 1.2 innings and was tagged for the loss. He gave up 2 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 1.

Peru State has an important four-game series with Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) South foe Missouri Valley this weekend at the Centennial Complex Field in Peru. A double header will be played each day beginning at 1 p.m. The Vikings are 13-25 overall and 6-14 in conference play. The Bobcats need to win the series to keep at least third place in the Heart North.
 
Senior Day will be held on Saturday following the double header.
 
On Tuesday, April 20, the Bobcats will host Graceland (Iowa) in a Heart North match-up. The Yellowjackets are 10-22 on the year and are 3-15 in the Heart North.
