Peru State Baseball Splits with Briar Cliff University

(Peru, Neb.) –  The Peru State baseball team split a double header with non-conference foe Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa, on March 30. The first game was 2-6 in favor of the opponent. Game two was 14-5 in favor of the Bobcats.
 
Peru State is now 10-16-1 overall on the year while Briar Cliff is 21-6 overall.
 
Game One
 
After having a scoreless inning by both clubs, Briar Cliff struck first in the bottom of the second with four runs on four hits.

For Peru State's offense they could not get a hit in the third, four and fifth innings while Briar Cliff extended the lead in the game in the bottom of the fifth scoring two more runs to make it 6-0.
 
In the top of the sixth, Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) doubled to left. A passed ball by Briar Cliff would advance Torres to third. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) reached first on a fly ball drop as Torres would score the first run for the 'Cats. After an out Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) reached first on a wild throw by Briar Cliff as Landaeta advanced to third. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) reached first on a fielder's choice. Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) singled to right as Landaeta would score the last run for the Bobcats.
 
Briar Cliff scored their six runs on eight hits and had five errors. Peru State scored their two runs on three hits and committed six errors
 
Torres, Landaeta, and Tavarez each had one hit. Tavarez had the lone RBI for Peru State.
 
Daniel Castillo (Barranquilla, Colombia) pitched three innings and allowed five hits and four runs - two of those runs were earned. Castillo also had two strikeouts, but was tagged for the loss. Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) pitched three innings and allowed three hits and two runs – just one run was earned.

Game 2
 
Briar Cliff would strike first just like in game one by scoring one in the bottom of the first.
 
In the top of the second inning, Tingwald, Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.), and Tavarez all reached base on a walk. Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) reached base on a fielder's choice as Tingwald scored with Francisco being forced out. Wright advanced to second on a stolen base. Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) reached on a walk. Edwin Quinones (Loiza, P.R.) entered to pinch run for Chacin. Torres singled to center as Tavarez and Wright scored. Landaeta singled to left. Quinones and Torres both scored. Peru State led 5-0 going into the bottom of the second.
 
The Chargers would get one run in the bottom of the inning as Peru State would still lead 5-2.

In the third inning after a Bobcat struck out, Wright homered to left on a 0-1 count as the Bobcats led 6-2.
 
In the bottom of the third Briar Cliff would score two runs to come a little closer as the score was 6-4 in favor of the 'Cats.
 
The top of the fourth was another big inning for Peru State. Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) reached base on a wild throw. After an out, Tingwald reached base getting hit by a pitch. Tavarez doubled to deep right-center as Cendejas and Tingwald would both score. After an out, Wright would reach base after getting walked. Chacin doubled to center bringing Tavarez and Wright home. Peru State would gain four runs in the innings to make the score 10-4 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
 
The Chargers scored just one run in the bottom of the four as the Bobcats led 10-5.
 
In the top of the sixth after an out, Tavarez doubled to center. After an out, Wright reached on a walk. Chacin singled to right as Tavarez scored and Wright would advance to third. Hector singled to center bringing Wright and Chacin home to score. Torres advanced to third on a misplayed grounder. Landaeta singled to short as Torres scored. Bobcats scored four in the inning to extend the lead 14-5.
 
Peru State scored their 14 runs on 11 hits and committed three errors. The Chargers scored their five runs on ten hits and had two errors.
 
Chacin and Landaeta each had three hits on the day. Chacin went three for three. Torres and Tavarez had two hits each. Wright had the lone home run for Peru State.
 
Torres led the team with four RBIs while Chacin and Landaeta each had three.
 
Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched three innings and allowed five hits and four runs – three of the runs were earned. Adams had four strikeouts in the game and earned the win. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) pitched four innings and allowed four hits and gave up no runs. Laureano had seven strikeouts.

Upcoming Games
On April 2 and 3 the baseball team will be back in Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) play as they take on conference foe Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. Both of the days are double headers starting at 1 p.m. The Vikings are currently 5-16 overall and 1-11 in the Heart North.

On April 7 the baseball team will be back in non-conference action as they take on Briar Cliff at home. The double header will begin at 1 p.m.
