Peru State Gains One Win and One Tie over Doane University

(Peru, Neb.) – On March 25, the Bobcats were able to win game one 7-6 and the second game ended in a tie 8-8 due to no lights at Doane. It was the first tie since 2011 versus Friends (Kan.) ending at 2-2.
 
Peru State improved to 7-13-1 overall while Doane fell to 13-8-1 overall. The 'Cats four-game win streak stays alive with the tie.
 
Game One
 
With a scoreless first inning by both clubs the 'Cats were able to strike first in the top of the second with two runs. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston, Neb.) and Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) both were walked. The runners advanced on a fielder's choice. Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) singled, but advanced to second on a throwing error bringing in Tingwald and Solis to score.
 
Doane was able to cut the lead of the 'Cats in half when they scored one run in the bottom of the second.
 
In the top of the third Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled to right. On a fielder's choices, Torres advanced to second. After an out Tingwald was hit by a pitch and stole second while Torres stole third. Solis singled to center field bringing the in two runners. This made the score 4-1.

In the bottom of the third the Doane offense started heating up when they ran up five runs on four hits. Doane led 6-4 to end the inning.
 
In the top of the fifth the first two batters struck out before Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) singled up the middle. Tingwald reached first on a fielding error as Cendajas would advance to second. Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, P.R.)  entered to pinch run for Cendajas. Solis doubled to center field bringing in Tingwald and Santiago. The next batter grounded out to end the inning. The Bobcats were able to score two runs on two hits to bring the score back to even at six all.
 
Doane was unable to get any hits and any runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
In the top of the sixth the first batter Caballero was walked. Victor Figueroa (Caguas, P.R.) pinch ran for Caballero. The next batter, Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) was walked as the base runner advanced. The next batter was out on a fielder's choice as the base runners would advance to third and second. Torres hit a sac fly as Figueroa scored. Doane would retire the very next batter to end the inning. The 'Cats would take the lead after scoring one run on zero hits to make the score 7-6.
 
Figueroa run would be the game-winning run as the next two innings would be scoreless.
 
Solis led the team with two hits. Torres, Cendajas, and Caballero each registered one hit in game one. Solis had a game-high four RBIs. Caballero added two RBIs and Torres added one.

Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 3 hits and 4 earned runs. Rodriguez had 4 strikeouts. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Laureano struck out 1 Doane Batter. Daniel Castillo (Barranquilla, Columbia) pitched 3 innings and allowed 1 hit and 0 runs. Castillo was able to strike out 2 batters and earned the win.

Game Two

In the top of the first inning the 'Cats struck with three runs. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) doubled to left field. Cendajas singled, but advanced to second on the throwing error as Landeata would score. Tingwald homered to right field. The three runs were scored on three hits.

In the top of the second Wright singled to third base. Wright stole second. A ground out would get Wright to third. Torres tripled to center field bringing in Wright to score. After another out, Cendajas singled to right center bring in Torres. The 'Cats finished the top of the second with two runs on three hits. Peru State Led Doane going into the bottom of the second inning 5-0.

Doane did not score any runs in the bottom of the second inning.

In the third inning both team's defenses stepped up allowing zero runs on zero hits.

Peru State in the top of the fourth scored zero runs on one hit and leaving one in scoring position. The 'Cats still led 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Doane was able to find some offense as they scored seven runs on four hits. Doane would take the lead 7-5 going into the fifth inning.

Peru State and Doane would go scoreless in the top of the fifth.

In the sixth inning Caballero was walked, but was able to advance to second on a wild pitch. Diego Rivera (Carolina, P.R.) struck out swinging, but reached first base on wild pitch as Caballero advanced to third. Jeremy Santiago pinch ran for Rivera. Torres grounded out to first and Jeremy Santiago scored on the play. Peru State got one run on zero hits to bring the score back within one
run 7-6.

Doane extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as they mustered one run on two hits to give the Tigers a two-run lead 8-6 going into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh inning Cendajas walked. Santiago pinch ran for Cendajas. Santiago advanced to second on a balk. Tingwald was hit by a pitch. Figueroa pinch ran for Tingwald. Figueroa advanced to second on a wild pitch and Jeremy Santiago advanced to third. Solis grounded out to second and Figueroa advanced to third as Jeremy Santiago would score. Tavarez hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the game-tying run in Figueroa. The very next batter flied out as well.

The game would end in a tie in eight full innings due to no stadium lights at Doane.

Cendejas had a team-high two hits. Torres, Landaeta, Tingwald, Wright, Solis, Tavarez each had one hit in the game. Torres, Cendejas, and Tingwald each registered two RBIs.

Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched 3 innings and allowed 3 hits and 4 earned runs. Pacheco struck out 2 batters. Garrett Bassinger (Nebraska City) allowed 0 hits and 2 earned runs. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Adams had 10 strikeouts in the game.

Upcoming Games

The team will be on the road March 27 and 28 as they head to Canton, Mo., to take on conference opponent Culver-Stockton College (Mo.) in a two-day double header. The first pitch on the 27th is slated for 1 p.m. and on the 28th the start time is 12 p.m. The Wildcats are 6-15 overall and are 2-6 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division.

On March 30 the baseball team will have a non-conference game versus Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, for a double header starting at 1 p.m. The Chargers are currently 19-2 on the year.
