(Peru, Neb.) – After splitting a double header with Mount Mercy on Saturday, the Peru State Bobcat baseball team won a double header against the Mustangs on Sunday to take the four-game series.

The 'Cats won 4-0 in the first game while holding off Mount Mercy in the second game in an 11-10 slugfest.

Peru State improved to 6-13 overall and more importantly are now 4-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division. The Mustangs fell to 14-7 on the year and are 4-4 in the Heart North.

The four-game series was to have been played in Peru. However, Mother Nature and her winds, plus the earlier rain in the week, had other plans forcing the series to be played in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Game One Action

Peru State got on the board first when
Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) homered in the bottom of the first over the center field fence on a 1-1 count.

The 'Cats would add a run in the bottom of the second.
Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) singled to right and would advance to second on a ground out. After a second out,
Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) doubled to right center to drive in Solis to make it 2-0.

The Bobcats would plate another run in the bottom of the fourth. Solis doubled to deep center to start the inning. On the second out, which was a ground out, Solis moved to third. Caballero would hit another double to deep right to drive in Solis to make it 3-0 at that point.

Peru State would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. After an out,
Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) doubled to left-center. After a pitching change, a second out was recorded.
Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) entered as a pinch hitter and singled to the infield, Wright advanced to third. Wright would eventually score on an error for the final run of the first game.

The Bobcats scored their four runs on nine hits and committed one error. Mount Mercy had just three hits and also had one error.

Solis and Caballero each had two hits to lead the 'Cats. Caballero was credited with two RBI while Cendejas had the other RBI.

Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) tossed a complete game for the win. Rodriguez threw seven innings and allowed just three hits while striking out eight.

The second game was the opposite of the first as it was a slugfest.

Mount Mercy scored two runs in the top of the first to start things off.

The Bobcats would respond with a run in the bottom of the frame.
Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled up the middle to start the inning. After an out, Cendejas singled thru the hole at shortstop to move Torres to third. On a wild pitch, Torres scored to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Mustangs added one in the top of the second to increase their lead to 3-1.

Peru State would explode in the bottom of the second for seven runs.
Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) was hit by a pitch and then Wright was walked.
Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) bunted and reached to load the bases.
Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) singled to center to drive in Tavarez and Wright to tie the score at 3-3. Adams stopped at second and
Tyler Levy (Nebraska City) entered to run for Chacin. Torres bunted and reached base to load the bases again.
Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) singled to shallow left to drive in Adams and Levy to make it 5-3. Torres and Landaeta each stole a base to advance.
Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) singled thru the hole at second to drive in Torres and Landaeta. Solis singled to left to advance Tingwald to second. Tavarez reached on a walk to load the bases. Wright was hit by a pitch to score Tingwald to make it 8-3.

Mount Mercy scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the score to 9-5.

The Bobcats would respond with two in the bottom of the frame. Torres doubled to deep right-center to start the inning. After an out, Torres went to third on a wild pitch. Cendejas doubled to deep right to score Torres to make it 10-5.
Joseph Vargas (Juan Diaz, P.R.) entered to run for Cendejas. Tingwald singled to left to score Vargas for Peru State's final run of the game.

The Mustangs would score two in the top of the sixth to cut the score to 11-7 and left two on base.

Mount Mercy plated three in the top of the seventh before Peru State got out of the jam for the win. The Mustangs left the bases loaded in the top of the frame.

Peru State scored 11 runs on 14 hits and committed one error. Mount Mercy scored their ten runs on 11 hits and did not have any errors.

Torres went three for five to lead the team. Cendejas, Tingwald, and Solis each added two hits. Tingwald led the team with three RBI while Landaeta and Chacin were each credited with two.

Caballero started the game for Peru State and was credited for the win. Caballero tossed 5.1 innings and allowed 9 hits, 7 earned runs, and struck out 5.
John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) threw 1.1 innings. Laureano gave up 2 hits, 3 runs – 1 earned, and struck out 2.
Joshua Santiago (Carolina, P.R.) threw the final out and was credited for the save.

Peru State will be hosting Graceland (Iowa), Mother Nature permitting, on Wednesday in a double header beginning at 2 p.m. The Yellowjackets are 4-11 on the season and 1-5 in the Heart North.

The Bobcats are then scheduled to travel to Crete to take on Doane in a non-conference double header on Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. The Tigers are 13-7 on the season.

This weekend, the 'Cats will take on another set of 'Cats in Canton, Mo., when they face Culver-Stockton on Saturday and Sunday. The Wildcats are presently 6-15 on the year and are 2-6 in the Heart North.
