Peru State Baseball Drops Four in Oklahoma

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcat baseball team played four games in Bartlesville, Okla., over the weekend and dropped all four.
 
Peru State fell 22-7 and 4-0 to Oklahoma Wesleyan (OKWU) on Friday and lost 7-5 to the Eagles Saturday afternoon. On Sunday morning before heading back to Nebraska, the 'Cats dropped a 3-1 contest to Lyon (Ark.). Lyon had been preseason ranked 14th.
 
With the losses, Peru State falls to 1-10 on the year. OKWU improved to 10-2 while Lyon picked up their first win and is now 1-5.
 
Due to short staffing, only one of the Oklahoma Wesleyan games have play-by-play information. Thus, only main statistics can be provided.
 
Oklahoma Wesleyan Game One
 
OKWU scored their 22 runs on 15 hits and do not commit any errors. Peru State scored their seven runs on eight hits and had one error.

Josue Francisco (San Cristobel, D.R.) led the 'Cats as he went three for four. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) and Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each had two hits for the Bobcats. Tingwald was credited with two RBI while Francisco, Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama), Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.), Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.), and Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) each were credited with one RBI.
 
Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P.R.) started the game and was tagged for the loss. Diana threw 1.2 innings and allowed 5 hits, 8 earned runs, and struck out 1. Reiner Mendez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) threw 1.1 innings. Mendez allowed 7 hits and 9 earned runs. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tossed the final 3 innings. Adams allowed 3 hits, 5 runs – 4 earned, and struck out 4.

Oklahoma Wesleyan Game Two
 
This game was more of a pitching contest. The Eagles scored their four runs on five hits and committed one error. The Bobcats had just one hit and committed two miscues.
 
Francisco had the lone hit for the Bobcats.
 
Steven Ortiz (Yonkers, N.Y.) threw 5 innings for Peru State and suffered the loss. Ortiz allowed 5 hits – 4 runs – 2 earned, and struck out 7. Joshua Santiago (Carolina, P.R.) threw 1 inning and did not allow any hits.

Oklahoma Wesleyan Game Three
 
Peru State struck first in the top of the third inning after an out. Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) singled to short and went to second on a ground out. Cendejas singled to third with Torres stopping at third. Solis stepped to the plate and on a 0-1 count, hit a home run to make it 3-0.

The Eagles would tie it in the bottom of the frame and then took the lead in the fourth by scoring a run. They added one more in the fifth to lead 5-3 heading into the sixth inning.
 
Peru State would tie the game in the top of the sixth. Tingwald reached on a walk. After an out, Wright singled to third with Tingwald stopping at second. On a wild pitch, the base runners advanced. Landaeta doubled to right to knot the score at 5-5. The next two Bobcats were out leaving Landaeta eventually stranded at third.
 
OKWU would plate two in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead and eventually win the game 7-5.
 
The Eagles scored their seven runs on nine hits and had no errors. Peru State scored their five runs on 11 hits and committed one error.
 
Torres, Cendejas, and Wright all had two hits to lead the Bobcats. Solis was credited with three RBI while Landaeta had the other two.
 
Manual Caballero (Dolega, Panama) started on the mound for Peru State. Caballero threw 4 innings and allowed 6 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 2. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) tossed one out. Laureano allowed 2 hits and 1 earned run. Adams pitched the final 1.2 innings and suffered the loss. Adams gave up just 1 hit, 2 runs – 1 earned, and struck out 3.

Lyon Game
 
When you toss a one-hitter, you most likely expect your team to win. However, this was not the case in the game against Lyon.

Lyon scored their three runs on one hit and did not commit any errors. Peru State scored their one run on three hits and had one error.
 
Tingwald had two hits from the 'Cats while Torres had the other.
 
Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) tossed the first 5 innings and only allowed one hit, but that was enough as he gave up 3 earned runs while striking out 5. Santiago threw the final inning and did not allow any hits.

LYON BOX SCORE
 
Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats will be in St. Louis, Mo., this Friday and Saturday to play one game on each day. On Friday, Peru State will be facing Missouri Baptist at 2 p.m. The Spartans are 4-3 on the season.
 
On Saturday, March 6, the 'Cats will face Indiana Tech at 10 a.m. The Warriors are 0-7 on the season and will play one contest before facing Peru State.
