Bobcat Softball Sweeps Bethel

(Peru, Neb.) –The Peru State softball team picked up two wins against Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., on Saturday.
 
The Bobcats won their second and third game of the season by taking the first game 10-1 over the Threshers. The 'Cats then took the second game 17-5.
 
Peru State is now 3-1 while Bethel fell to 1-3 on the year.
 
Game One Action
Peru State got on the board in the top of the second inning. Tyler Farrell (Brandon, Fla.) reached on a walk. Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) reached first on a fielder's choice. Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) reached base on a Bethel error. Wessel went to second. TeAnna Tenopir (Waverly) reached base on a Bethel mistake with the base runners advancing. Alyiah Franco (Syracuse, Utah) singled to center. Wessel and Rothschild would score as Tenopir went to third. Franco would advance to second on a stolen base. On a Bobcat ground out, Tenopir scored. Franco would advance to third. Takia Walker (Enterprise, Ala.) would triple to right to bring in Franco as the 'Cats would score their final run of the inning. Peru State would lead 4-0.

Nobody would score in the third inning of the game.

In the top of the fourth, Rothschild would single to center and she would advance to second on a stolen base. Tenopir would reach base on a Threshers' error and Rothschild would score on the play. A ground out by the Bobcats would put Tenopir in scoring position as she advanced to third. An error by Bethel would bring Tenopir in to score. Bailey Deal (Timnath, Colo.) singled to left. Carli Kohout (Cortland) singled to right and Deal would advance to second. Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled to right. Deal scored and Kohout would advance to third. As the top of the fourth concluded the 'Cats would lead 7-0 in game one.

It would be another three-run inning for Peru State. Rothschild singled to center. Tenopir hit a two-run home run to center. Franco doubled to right. Deal would reach base on a wild throw. Franco would advance to third on the throw and then would score on the throw. After the top of the fifth inning, the Bobcats led 10-0.

Bethel would score their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning as the eight-run rule was in play.

Peru State scored their ten runs on nine hits committing three errors. The Threshers scored their one run on three hits and committed four errors.

Rothschild and Franco each had two hits to lead Peru State. Deal, Tenopir, Walker, Kohout, and Wilke each had one. Tenopir had the lone home run of the game. Tenopir and Franco led the team with two RBI while Walker, Wilke, and Deal each were credited with one RBI.

Alana Krieser (Lincoln) played a complete game for the win. Krieser pitched five innings and allowed three hits and one run not earned.

Second Game Action

Bethel would get on the board first in the bottom of the second to lead the 'Cats 1-0.

Peru State had a big top of the third. Deal singled to left. Kohout would single deep to right-center and Deal would advance to second. Wilke doubled to center to drive in Deal and Kohout. Farrell doubled to left and Wilke would score. Wessel singled to left as Farrell would score. Wessel would advance to second on the throw. Rothschild would single to center. Wessel would be able to score. Tenopir would reach first base on an error. Rothschild advanced to second. Franco singled to right center as Rothschild would score and Tenopir would be at third. Franco would advance to second on a stolen base. Patrice Trice (Nebraska City) singled to right as Tenopir and Franco would score. Walker reached first base on an error by Bethel. Trice would advance to third. Trice scored on a stolen base. Peru State led 9-1.

In the top of the fourth Wessel reached first on an error by the Threshers. Another error allowed Wessel to advance to second. Rothschild reached base on a mistake by Bethel. Tenpoir doubled to left as Wessel and Rothschild scored. A miscue by Bethel would get Tenpoir to third. Deal would reach base on another miscue by the Threshers. Jerica German (Cortland) singled to left as Tenopir and Deal would score. German would advance to second on the throw. The 'Cats racked up four runs to extend their lead to 13-1.

Bethel would score one run in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bobcats would lead 13-2.

Andrea Page (Palisade) reached first on a walk. Franco reached base on an error on the Threshers. Page would advance to second. Deal would double to deep left as Page and Franco would both come in to score. Walker reached first on a miscue on Bethel as Deal would score. Aliana Lacy (Lincoln) singled to right as Walker would advance to third. Wilke singled to center as Walker scored. 'Cats had four runs in that inning.

Bethel would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the eight-run rule was still in place.

Peru State scored their 17 runs on 17 hits and committed one error. The Threshers scored their five runs on 11 hits and committed seven errors.

Kohout and Wilke lead the team with three hits each. Farrell and Deal were credited for two hits. German, Lacy, Wessel, Trice, Franco, Page, and Tenopoir each had one. Wilke had three RBIs and German, Tenopoir, Deal, and Trice each had two.

Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) started the game and picked up the win. Leach tossed four innings and gave up seven hits, two runs – one earned, and struck out two batters. Wessel tossed one inning and gave up four hits and three earned runs.

Upcoming Games

Peru State played McPherson (Kan.) in a double header on Sunday before heading back to Nebraska.

The softball team will be playing in the Friends Tournament this weekend in Wichita, Kan. As of now Peru State will be playing Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) on March 5 with the first pitch at 12 p.m. On the same day the 'Cats will play Doane University at 4 p.m. At 6 p.m. the team will play Hastings College.

On day two of the Friends Tournament, the softball team will play Kansas Wesleyan University at 12 p.m., and at 2 p.m. they will play Dakota Wesleyan University.
