Peru State Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short

(Peru, Neb.) – The women's team from Benedictine College (Kan.) got all they could handle from the Bobcats Wednesday night in Peru. The Ravens, who are receiving votes in the most recent NAIA coaches' poll won the Heart of America Athletic Conference cross-divisional match-up 71-64 over Peru State.
 
Benedictine improved to 14-6 overall and 12-4 in the Heart South while Peru State fell to 4-13 overall and 2-9 in the Heart North.
 
First Quarter Action
 
The Bobcats jumped out to the first lead of the game after Dayna Dewitt (Mansfield, Texas) made a bucket with 9:28 remaining in the quarter.

The Ravens took the lead on a three and the Bobcats struck right back after Mackenzie Shupe (Lenexa, Kan.) made a two-point shot.

The Bobcats would take the lead again with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter 7-6 after Shupe made a three-pointer off an assist from Kristian Dewitt (Mansfield, Texas).
 
The largest lead at the point for the Bobcats was when Shupe picked the pocket of a Ravens player and took it the distance to make a layup with 3:02 remaining making the score 15-11.
 
After ten minutes the Bobcats would take a one-point advantage heading into the second with the score 15-14.
 
Second Quarter Action
 
Just like the first quarter the second quarter started the same way after Libby Baumert (Plattsmouth, Neb.) made a field goal with 9:46 remaining with the score at 17-14.
 
After four straight points from Benedictine to take the lead at 18-17 with 8:21, Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa) made a shot to give the Bobcats a 19-18 lead with 8:01 remaining in the half.
 
The Ravens would go on a 9-3 run to take a 27-22 lead with 3:00 left in the first half. Peru State would score three straight points to get back within two points of Benedictine.
 
Shupe would make two free throws and Julie Miller (Easton, Kan.) would make one of two with to put the score at 27-25 with 1:46 remaining.
 
There would be no more scoring in the half as the Ravens would take the halftime lead 27-25.
 
Third Quarter Action
 
Duncan would get the quarter started off right after a made three off the pass from K. Dewitt to get the lead back 28-27 with 9:49 remaining.
 
The Ravens would score six straight points before the 'Cats scored five straight themselves. D. Dewitt made a bucket for the first two and Duncan connected on a made three off the pass from Shupe to get the Bobcats back within one at 34-33 with 6:39.
 
The scoring would go back and forth for the next few minutes until the Ravens would get their largest lead of the game so far at 47-38 with 31 seconds.
 
With 11 seconds remaining D. Dewitt made a field goal to get the Bobcats back within seven at 47-40.
 
Fourth Quarter Action
 
Peru State would open the quarter on a 7-0 run to get the game tied up at 47. The scoring would start with Ellie Bream (Waverly) making a bucket followed by K. Dewitt converting a bucket and would also make the free throw. K Dewitt made another layup to end the seven straight points for the 'Cats

Mackenzie Shupe hits a trey late in the contest. Shupe finished with 14 points.
 
Shupe would get the lead for the Bobcats after making a three off the pass from D. Dewitt with 8:07 remaining with the score at 50-49.
 
The Ravens would tie the game for the fourth time in the contest before D. Dewitt broke the tie after sinking one of two free throws to give the 'Cats a 53-52 advantage.
 
The game would be tied at 53 and 57 before the Ravens would score fourth straight points to lead 61-57 with 3:29 remaining.
 
Duncan made a three to end the Benedictine run at four and more importantly cut the lead back down to one with just over three minutes to play.
 
Another four straight points for the Ravens would put the game out of reach at this point. Benedictine would go on to win the game 71-64.

Team Stats
 
The Ravens connected on 25 of 56 field goals for 44.6% which included 10 of 24 from three for 38.5%. At the free throw line, Benedictine made 11 of 17 for 64.7%. The Bobcats connected on 24 of 58 field goals for 41.4% which included 5 of 13 from long distance for 38.5%. At the charity stripe, Peru State went 11 of 15 for 73.3%.
 
The Ravens grabbed 34 rebounds – six were on the offensive end while the 'Cats grabbed 32.
 
Benedictine dished out 19 assists while committing 15 turnovers. Peru State dished out eight assists and had 15 turnovers.
 
The Ravens added six steals and five blocks while the Bobcats had five steals and registered zero blocks in the game.
 
Peru State Individual Stats
 
D. Dewitt added a Bobcat career-high and game-high 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting. There were three other Peru State players in double figures Shupe 14 and Duncan and K. Dewitt added 11 (career-high).
 
D. Dewitt added game-high nine rebounds – four were offensive. K. Dewitt added five boards.
 
K. Dewitt added team-high and career-high four assists while D. Dewitt dished out two.
 
Shupe registered two steals. D. Dewitt, Bream, and K. Dewitt each had one.
 
Upcoming Contests
 
The women's basketball team will be on the road Feb. 6 when they travel to take on Evangel University (Mo.) at 2 p.m. The Crusaders are 10-7 overall and 8-6 in the Heart South.
 
The team will be back at home Monday Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. as Central Methodist (Mo.)  comes to town. This will be the first of two straight home games for the 'Cats
 
On Feb. 10 at Missouri Valley College will come to the Al Wheeler Activity Center to take on Peru State.
