Bobcat Baseball Splits at Avila

(Peru, Neb.) – Peru State picked its first win of the baseball season Wednesday as they took the first game of a double header over Avila in Kansas City, Mo. The 'Cats won 9-1 but then dropped the second game of the double header to the Eagles 6-2.
 
Peru State is now 1-4 on the young season while Avila is 1-1.
 
First Game Action
 
Peru State immediately got on the board in the top of the first inning. Hector Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) singled to right and after an out, stole second. On a fly ball out, Torres went to third. Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) singled to left to drive in Torres. Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) doubled to right with Cendejas stopping at third. Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) reached on a walk to load the bases. Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) tripled to deep left-center to clear the bases to put the score at 4-0.

Avila scored their lone run in the bottom of the first.
 
Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) singled to shallow left to start the top of the second. Chacin went to second on a sac bunt by Torres. Josue Francisco reached on an Eagle error with Chacin moving to third. Francisco would then move to second with a steal. Chacin would later score on a ground out to move the score to 5-1.
 
After getting out of a jam in the bottom of the second, the 'Cats plated two more runs in the top of third. After an out, Tavarez singled to center and then went to second with a stolen base. Wright reached on a walk. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) doubled to right with both base runners scoring to make it 7-1.
 
The only other runs scored came in the top of the fifth. Tavarez singled to first to start the frame and went to third when Wright singled to center. Tavarez would score on an Eagle error and Wright would move all the way to third on the play. After an out, Chacin reached on an error and Wright would score the final run of the game.
 
AVILA GAME ONE GAME BOOK

Peru State scored their nine runs on 13 hits and committed no errors. Avila scored their lone run on three hits and committed three errors.
 
Tavarez went three for three in the contest while Torres, Cendejas, Wright, and Chacin each had two hits. Wright was credited with three RBI while Adams had two RBI. Tingwald and Cendejas each had one RBI.
 
Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P.R.) started the game on the mound and picked up the win. Diana threw six innings allowing just three hits, one earned run, and struck out nine. Manual Caballero (Dolega, Panama) threw one inning. Caballero did not allow any hits and struck out two.
 
Second Game Action
 
Peru State struck first in the second game in the top of the second inning. After an out, Solis doubled to deep right-center and went to third on a ground out. Wright reached on a wild throw and Solis scored to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
 
Avila scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the day at 3-1.
 
In the top of the fourth, after an out, Solis homered over the right-field fence to make it 3-2.
 
The Eagles would get a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth for the final scoring of the game.

Avila scored their six runs on six hits and committed one error. Peru State scored their two runs on six hits and also had one error.
 
Solis led Peru State as he went two for three with one RBI. Wright was credited with the other RBI.
 
Joshua Santiago (Carolina, P.R.) started on the bump for the Bobcats and threw 4.1 innings and took the loss. Santiago allowed 5 hits, 6 earned runs, and struck out 3. Garrett Bassinger (Nebraska City) tossed two outs and gave up one hit. Reiner Mendez (Barquismeto, Venezuela) threw the final inning and struck out the side.

Upcoming Contests
 
As part of the weather changes for the week in Peru State's schedule, the Bobcats will travel to McPherson, Kan., on Friday to face the Bulldogs in a double header beginning at 11 a.m. It will be the first games on the season for McPherson.
 
The following weekend, Feb. 12 and 13, the Bobcats will make their annual trek to Plainfield, Texas, to face Wayland Baptist in a four-game series with the double headers scheduled to start at 1 p.m. each day. Wayland Baptist is 2-2 on the season and will play four more games this weekend before Peru State hits town. The Pioneers split their season openers with Peru State's conference foe MidAmerica Nazarene where plenty of runs were scored in windy conditions.
