(Peru, Neb.) – On Saturday, October 23, the Peru State Women's Basketball team would lose in a hard-fought season-opening game 83-77 versus Doane University. The Tigers would start the season 1-0.
The 'Cats would fall to 0-1 having lost in the Al Wheeler Activity Center in Peru.
1st Quarter Action
Doane would get on the board first to take a 2-0 lead in the early part of the first quarter. Peru State would go on a 7-0 run off a bucket from
Lycia Peevy (Paris, Ark.), a three pointer by
Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa) off the pass from
Hailey Ingram (Omaha), and a two-point jumper from McKenzie Shupe
(Lenexa, Kan.). The 'Cats would lead 7-2 with 7:30 remaining in the first quarter.
The 'Cats would maintain the lead for the remainder for the quarter. They would have a 19-14 lead after the first ten minutes had been played.
2nd Quarter Action
Samantha Stewart (Mount Ayr, Iowa) would get fouled and go to the line to make one of two free throws to extend the Bobcats lead to six at 20-14.
Doane would fight back as they would take the lead off a made free throw at 22-21 with 7:46 left until intermission.
Two straight buckets by Peru State would give the lead right back to the 'Cats off a Peevy layup and an Ingram layup as they would lead 25-22. Two free throws by Ingram would see the lead get back to five for the Bobcats with 6:32 left in the quarter.
Just like the first quarter the second quarter the rest of the way would be tight as the Bobcats would have a small lead at 37-35.
3rd Quarter Action
Peru State would get on the board first in the second half with a layup by Peevy and Doane would come right back with a three-pointer to cut the lead to one at 39-38 in favor of the Bobcats.
The Bobcats would give up the lead when the Tigers made a three to lead 45-43 with 6:15 remaining in the quarter. Doane would score for the second straight time to extend their lead to four at 47-43. Peevy would end the run by Doane after converting a one and one opportunity to trim the Peru State deficit to one at 47-46.
The 'Cats would get the lead back after a three-ball from Stewart off the assist from Shupe. The game would be nick and tuck the rest of the quarter as they would be tied heading into the final ten minutes of the game at 57 all.
4th Quarter Action
Doane would take the lead with a free throw but would give the lead right back after Duncan would bury a three off the pass from Peevy to lead 60-58 early in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers would go on a 9-0 run to take a 67-60 lead in the game with 5:10 remaining in the game. Duncan would make two free throws to end the run, but the 'Cats would still trail 67-62 halfway through the fourth.
Peru State would fight back but the big run by Doane would be just what they needed to hold off the 'Cats and win the season opener 83-77.
Stats
Peru State would shoot 24-57 for 42.1% which would include 7-23 for 30.4% from behind the arc. At the free throw line, the 'Cats were 22-25 for 88%.
Peevy had a team high with 20 points and a team high with 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Bobcats had four other players in double figures which include – Ingram 13, Duncan 11, Shupe 11, and Stewart 11.
Ingram and Shupe led the way by dishing out four assists each.
Duncan had two steals while Ingram and Stewart each had one.
Peevy would have game-high four blocks.

Peru State will be on the road on Tuesday, October 26, as they travel to take on Bellevue, Neb., to take on Bellevue University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
