Peru State Baseball Takes Two of Three at Graceland

(Peru, Neb.) – After dropping the opener of a three-game series, the Bobcat baseball team rebounded to get two wins to take the series over Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa, this weekend.
 
Graceland took the first game 7-3 and then Peru State took the second game by the same score. The second game had to be suspended due to no lights and was completed on Sunday. The Bobcats then won the rubber game 14-5.
 
With the pair of wins, Peru State improved to 8-12 on the season and more importantly, are now 4-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Yellowjackets fell to 5-16 overall and are now 2-5 in conference play.
 
Graceland had challenges with Wifi at their city-field facility and was not able to do a play-by-play so only game statistics basically will be shared.

Saturday Game One
 
Peru State scored one in the second inning to take an early lead.

Graceland scored three in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
 
The Bobcats would plate one in the top of the sixth, but the 'Jackets added two more in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-2.
 
The 'Cats would get one run in the top of the seventh but it was not enough.
 
Graceland scored their seven runs on nine hits and committed three errors. Peru State scored their three runs on five hits and also had three errors.
 
Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) was the only Bobcat with more than one hit as he finished two of three in the first game. Tingwald, Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.), and Hector Torres (Gurabo, P.R.) each had one RBI. Tingwald and Wright each had a home run for the Bobcats.

Manual Caballero (Dolega, Panama) started on the mound for the 'Cats and was tagged for the loss. Caballero allowed seven hits, four runs – one earned, and struck out seven. Brock Renter (Valley) got one out. Renter allowed two hits, two earned runs, and struck out one. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) also recorded one out with a strikeout. Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) threw the final two outs both of which were strikeouts.

SATURDAY GRACELAND GAME ONE BOX SCORE
 
Saturday Game Two
 
Peru State scored most of its runs before Graceland got on the board. The Bobcats scored three in the top of the first, two in the top of the second, and one in the top of third to lead 6-0.
 
Graceland would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth. The 'Cats would add one run in the top of the sixth for the final score 7-3.
 
Peru State scored their seven runs on 12 hits and did not commit any errors. Graceland scored their three runs on nine hits and had one error.
 
Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) went three of four – which included one home run and one double – to lead the Bobcats. Darrien Liriano (Orlando, Fla.), Tingwald, and Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each finished with two hits. Cendejas led the team with three RBI with Liriano, Tingwald, and Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) each finishing with one. Liriano, Tingwald, and Torres each had a double.
 
Joshua Santiago (Carolina, P.R.) threw five innings and earned the win. Santiago allowed seven hits, three earned runs, and struck out nine. Blake Feeken (Crete) threw four innings. Feeken allowed two hits and struck out four.

SATURDAY GRACELAND GAME TWO BOX SCORE
 
Sunday Game
 
The Bobcats jumped on the 'Jackets with five runs in the top of the first. Graceland plated one run in the bottom of the first to put the score at 5-1.
 
Peru State would add one run in the top of the fifth and Graceland countered with a run in the bottom in the bottom of the sixth to put the score at 6-2.
 
The 'Cats added four runs in the top of the seventh to move to a 10-2 lead. In the top of the eighth, Peru State added two more runs to go up 12-2. Graceland added one run in the bottom of the inning.
 
In the ninth inning, both teams scored two runs for the final 14-5 score.
 
Chacin and Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) both had three hits to lead Peru State. Torres, Caballero, and Tavarez each finished with two hits. Tavarez and Chacin were each credited with three RBI while Torres had two. Caballero, Chacin, Landaeta, and Tavarez each had one double in the contest.

Daniel Castillo (Barranquilla, Colombia) threw six innings and picked up the win. Castillo allowed six hits, two earned runs, and struck out eight. Keniel Cruz (Cayey, P.R.) threw two innings. Cruz gave up three hits, one earned run, and struck out four. Reiner Mendez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) tossed one out. Mendez allowed one earned run. Pacheco threw the final two outs. He allowed one hit and one earned run.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats will face another North Division opponent Grand View (Iowa) this coming weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Game time both days is 1 p.m. The Vikings are off to a 3-14 start and are 1-7 in Heart play.
 
On St. Patrick's Day, Peru State will host a non-conference double-header against Briar Cliff (Iowa) beginning at 1 p.m. The Chargers are 7-9 so far this season and have won six in a row at the time of this press release.
