Doane beats Peru State in High-Scoring Contest

(Peru, Neb.) – The Doane University Tigers beat Peru State College in one nine-inning contest in Crete, Neb., Tuesday. The Tigers won 11-9 in a hitting fest by both teams.
 
Doane improved to 4-4 overall on the season and Bobcats are 6-11 overall this season in this non-conference battle between the Great Plains Athletic Conference and the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
 
The 'Cats scored two runs in the top of the first when Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) singled down right field line to drive in Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.)  and Darrien Liriano (Orlando, Fla.). Liriano had reached with a single to center field and Wright had reached on a walk.
 
There would be no scoring for either teams in the second inning. Doane would be able to get back in the game with two runs in the third and took the lead with three runs in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth inning the Bobcats got things rolling. To start the inning Liriano hit a triple down the right field line. Wright would then homer over the left field fence to get two runs on the board. Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had an infield single and would advance bases on errors. Cendejas reached on a walk and Manual Caballero (Dolega, Panama) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eddy Pimentel (San Juan, Puerto Rico) got walked and drove in Tavarez. After a pitching change, Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) walked to drive in Cedejas. Later Pimental would score for the sixth run of the inning and the Bobcats led 8-5 at that point.
 
Doane would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning with four runs and then added two more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 11-8.
 
The 'Cats would score in the top of the ninth inning when Julian Fernandez (Middle Village, N.Y.) hit a single shot home run to give the Bobcats its only run in the inning.
 
Doane scored their 11 runs on 14 hits and committed three errors. The 'Cats scored their nine runs on eight hits and had only two errors.
 
Liriano had the most hits on the team with three. Fernandez, Wright, Tavarez, Chacin, and Pimentel each credited with one hit.
 
Fernandez and Wright each had one home run for the Bobcats with Wright and Cendejas leading the team with two RBI.
 
Brock Renter (Valley, Neb.) started on the mound for the Bobcats and was tagged with the loss. Renter threw 4.1 innings and gave up 11 hits, nine earned runs, and struck out five. Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) came for 0.2 innings. Pacheco gave up one hit, one earned run, and struck out one. Daniel Castillo (Barranquilla, Colombia) also saw some time on the mound as he threw three innings and gave up two hits, one earned run, and struck out five.

Peru State will be back in the conference play as they travel to Lamoni, Iowa, to battle Graceland in a three-game series. A double header on Saturday will begin at 1 P.M. The single game on Sunday will start at 1 p.m.
 
On March 14 the 'Cats will be back at home this time taking on Grand View (Iowa) in the same three game series as Graceland's games will be played in.
 
Then, on March 17, Peru State will be taking on Briar Cliff (Iowa) at home in a double header format with the first game starting at 1 P.M. and with game two to follow after a short intermission.
